Position Summary
The Health & Safety Advisor supports field and shop operations by implementing, monitoring, and continuously improving Plaas’s safety programs across construction, maintenance, fabrication, and outage projects, This role provides frontline coaching and technical guidance to supervisors and crews, ensuring compliance with OSHA and applicable state regulations, customer requirements, and Plaas’s internal safety standards. Key Responsibilities
Program implementation and compliance
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, applicable state regulations, and customer safety requirements at all active job sites.
- Assist with development and maintenance of project-specific safety plans, JSAs/JHAs, lift plans, and confined space entry procedures.
Field support and site inspections
- Conduct regular site and shop safety inspections on work involving high-pressure piping, welding, rigging, millwright activities, ammonia refrigeration systems, tanks, boilers, and pressure vessels.
- Identify unsafe conditions and at-risk behaviors, recommend practical corrective actions, and follow up to verify.
- Participate in pre-job planning, constructability reviews, and mobilization meetings to integrate safety into work sequencing and methods.
Training and coaching
- Deliver and document safety orientations for new hires and site-specific onboarding for project mobilization.
- Facilitate toolbox talks and targeted training on topics such as LOTO, fall protection, hot work, confined space, line breaking, ammonia refrigeration hazards, and mobile equipment.
- Coach foremen and supervisors on effective safety leadership, hazard recognition, and incident prevention in industrial construction environments.
Incident management and reporting
- Assist with incident and near-miss response, evidence preservation, root cause analysis, and development of corrective and preventative actions.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, findings, training, incidents, and corrective actions in accordance with Plaas and client requirements.
- Track leading and lagging indicators and contribute to periodic safety performance reports for management and key clients.
Client and regulatory interface
- Support project teams during client safety audits, site walks, and pre-qualification processes in industrial and energy sectors.
- Assist with documentation and readiness for audits related to ASME/NBIC work, confined space rescue services, and quality control systems.
- Help communicate Plaas’s safety expectations to subcontractors and verify their alignment with company and client standards.
Continuous improvement
- Participate in reviews of procedures related to power and process piping, tank construction/repair, confined space rescue, and fabrication to identify opportunities to reduce risk.
- Stay current on regulatory changes, industry best practices, and emerging risks in industrial construction and maintenance, and recommend updates to policies and training.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum 3-5 years of safety experience in industrial construction, mechanical contracting, piping, fabrication, or a closely related field.
- Working knowledge of OSHA construction and general industry requirements, with practical application in high-hazard environments (e.g., high-pressure piping, confined spaces, cranes/rigging, hot work).
- Demonstrated experience conducting field safety inspections, investigations, and toolbox training with craft and supervisory personnel.
- Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to build credibility and trust with field crews, supervision, and clients.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft 365) for reports, tracking, and training documentation.
Preferred
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Technology, or related discipline.
- Professional certification such as CHST, OHST, ASP, CSP, or equivalent, or active pursuit of one of these credentials.
- Experience with ammonia refrigeration, ASME and NBIC work, tank construction/repair, or power and process piping projects.
- Familiarity with quality control systems in an industrial mechanical environment.
Work Environment and Travel
- Role will spend the majority of time in the field and fabrication shops, including active industrial facilities and construction sites with exposure to noise, duct, temperature extremes, and other typical industrial conditions.
- Travel to job sites and client locations is required; frequency and duration will vary with project needs and may include overnight stays.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) use is mandatory and may include hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, flame-resistant clothing, fall protection, and respiratory protection where required.
