(Sr./Lead) Engineer/Analyst I (II)

PJM Interconnection, LLC and Careers
Audubon, PA Full Time
POSTED ON 12/29/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 2/28/2026
Flexible Work Arrangement: Hybrid (Onsite Tuesdays and Wednesdays, typically remote other weekdays)
PJM Interconnection sits at the heart of the nation's energy transformation. As electricity demand surges, PJM's transmission system is undergoing major upgrades to remain reliable and resilient. The grid is also adapting to a rapidly changing generation mix, with more renewable energy sources and evolving federal and state policies reshaping how electricity is produced and delivered. These changes bring novel engineering challenges and opportunities to innovate, making this one of the most exciting times to join PJM.
The Transmission Service Department (TSD) performs power flow analysis to determine transfer capability between PJM and neighboring systems and then facilitates the utilization of that capability to support interchange scheduling between PJM and those neighbors. Our work is essential to ensuring reliable operations across a complex and ever-changing grid.
Why Join Us?
Join a collaborative, high performing team working on novel power systems engineering challenges. You'll play a vital role in integrating renewable and traditional generation, large data centers, determining transfer capability and facilitating interchange with neighboring regions — directly supporting the reliability and flexibility of the grid as it evolves. You will also support the processes, applications and industry efforts associated with Open Access. If you enjoy solving complex problems and want to make a real impact on the future of energy, PJM is the place for you.
While there are overlapping responsibilities, the Transmission Service Engineer will focus more on the power flow analysis and determination of transfer capability. The Transmission Service Specialist will focus primarily on the facilitation and coordination of tools, projects and industry efforts.

Essential Functions:
  • Build, validate, and maintain accurate power flow models that reliably solve for a wide range of system conditions, including new generation and load patterns and outage scenarios.
  • Use PSS/e, MUST, TARA, PAAC or equivalent software to ensure flows remain within acceptable reactive, thermal and stability limits.
  • Lead efforts to improve and automate power flow calculations, using modern tools and scripting (Python, Oracle SQL, Excel).
  • Coordinate with neighboring balancing authorities to incorporate external data and ensure regional reliability.
  • Drive biannual updates of PJM’s power system model and flowgate methodology, identifying and reviewing critical flowgates as the system evolves.
  • Tackle new engineering challenges posed by the changing generation mix and grid resource patterns.
  • Support the tools, processes and procedures associated with transmission service and interchange.
  • Participate in innovative projects to support PJM’s mission and the industry’s transformation.
  • Provide occasional on-call support with infrequent after-hours incidents.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards including FERC, NERC, and NAESB requirements.
  • (Senior, Lead) Mentor and coach junior engineers in power flow concepts, modeling, and solution techniques.
Characteristics and Qualifications:
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Management Information Systems, Mathematics or equivalent work experience
  • (Senior) At least 5 years of experience in power flow studies and transmission system analysis.
  • (Lead) At least 10 years’ experience in power flow studies, transmission system analysis and demonstrated leadership roles.
  • Transmission Service Specialist: experience in application and project support, programming skills, familiarity with electric utility concepts.
  • Proficiency with power flow modeling software (PSS/e, PowerWorld, MUST, Probe, or similar). Experience with PowerGEM’s TARA and PAAC is a plus; training will be provided.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent teamwork abilities.
  • Self-motivation, attention to detail, and a passion for learning and innovation.
  • Aptitude for coaching and developing junior staff.
  • Experience with the MMWG’s IDC power flow model is preferred.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with Python and Oracle SQL is a plus.
Preferred:
  • MS, Engineering
  • Experience with wholesale energy markets and their impact on the Eastern Interconnection, the physics of moving power across the bulk electric grid, and related FERC directives
  • Experience using PSS/e, TARA, PowerWorld, MUST, Probe, or similar power system analysis program
  • Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions
  • Experience using PSS/e (power system analysis program)
