What are the responsibilities and job description for the Petition Circulator position at Pivotal Politics?
Job Title:
Petition Circulator – $2–$23 Per Signature | Multiple California Ballot Campaigns
Company:
Pivotal Politics LLC
Job Type:
1099 Independent Contractor – Commission Only
Location:
California (field work in various cities & counties)
Compensation Summary:
Core statewide petitions pay $2–$23 per valid voter signature.
If a single voter signs all eight active statewide petitions you are carrying, that one voter is worth about $23 in statewide pay alone.
If you manage to hit 100 sets in a week (100 voters who each sign all 8 active statewides), that equals about $2,300 per week from the statewides alone, before adding any countywide or citywide petitions and subject to validity/scrub.
Additional countywide and citywide campaigns can increase your total earnings.
About the Role
We are hiring motivated, outgoing petition circulators to help qualify multiple California ballot measures at the statewide, countywide, and citywide levels.
This is 1099 independent contractor work – you are paid per valid voter signature, not by the hour. High performers who work good locations, maintain strong validity, and carry multiple boards can build very competitive weekly earnings.
Statewide Petitions (California)
You may be carrying several of these at once, depending on region and campaign needs:
- Voter ID Requirement – $3 per signature
Adds a mandatory identification requirement in order to vote in California elections.
- 2/3 Vote for Property Tax Increases – $4 per signature
Requires a two-thirds (2/3) voter approval for any property tax increases.
- Continue Tax on High-Income Earners – $3 per signature
Continues an existing tax on high-income earners to maintain funding for public schools and medical care.
- University Support Staff First-Time Homebuyers Program – $3 per signature
Gives California university support staff (such as janitors, cafeteria workers, and researchers) access to the existing first-time homebuyers program.
- Middle-Income First-Time Homebuyers Program (Bonds, Not Taxes) – $3 per signature
Creates a first-time homebuyers program for middle-income families, funded through bonds instead of new taxes.
- Cap Executive & Administrator Salaries at Public Health Systems – $2 per signature
Caps the salaries of healthcare executives, administrators, and managers at $450,000 annually.
- Public Hospital Spending Requirement – $2 per signature
Requires public hospitals to spend 90% of their revenue on programs that reduce patient costs.
- Limit Political Spending of Healthcare Unions – $3 per signature
Limits the political spending of healthcare unions, restricting how much they can spend on political campaigns and related activities.
If a single voter signs all eight active statewide petitions you are carrying, that one voter is worth about $23 in statewide pay alone, before any countywide or citywide campaigns they may also sign.
There is an additional 9th statewide measure pending. Details, issue summary, and pay per signature will be announced once it goes live and are not included in the $23 or $2,300 examples above.
Example Weekly Earnings – 100 Sets on All Statewides
For this example, a “set” means one voter signing all 8 active statewide petitions you are carrying.
- 1 voter signing all 8 statewides = 1 set
- 100 sets = 100 voters each signing all 8 statewides = 100 signatures on each statewide petition.
Pay by petition at 100 sets (100 signatures each):
- Voter ID Requirement – $3 × 100 = $300/week
- 2/3 Vote for Property Tax Increases – $4 × 100 = $400/week
- Continue Tax on High-Income Earners – $3 × 100 = $300/week
- University Support Staff First-Time Homebuyers Program – $3 × 100 = $300/week
- Middle-Income First-Time Homebuyers Program (Bonds, Not Taxes) – $3 × 100 = $300/week
- Cap Executive & Administrator Salaries at Public Health Systems – $2 × 100 = $200/week
- Public Hospital Spending Requirement – $2 × 100 = $200/week
- Limit Political Spending of Healthcare Unions – $3 × 100 = $300/week
Total weekly pay from statewides at 100 sets:
300 400 300 300 300 200 200 300 = $2,300 per week
This is $2,300 per week from the statewides alone, before adding any countywide or citywide boards, and always subject to validity and scrub rules.
(Only valid for their specific cities.)
- Los Angeles Business Tax Repeal – City of Los Angeles – $5 per signature
Pay Structure & Validity / Scrub Policy
- Core statewide petitions pay between $2 and $4 per valid voter signature.
- A voter who signs all eight active statewides you are carrying is worth about $23 in statewide pay.
- If you reach 100 sets on all statewides in a week, that equals about $2,300 per week just from the statewides, before adding any countywide or citywide income.
All pay is based on valid voter signatures. We operate on an expectation of about 75% validity and up to 25% invalid.
If your invalid rate goes above 25%, we scrub down any signatures above that 25% invalid threshold, and pay is adjusted so it matches your valid performance. In practice, this means you are paid on valid signatures up to a 75% valid / 25% invalid ratio.
Your actual earnings depend on:
- How many hours you work
- The locations you choose
- How effectively you engage voters
- How clean, complete, and accurate your signatures are
Lodging Policy
(Effective January 2026 – Out-of-State Petitioners Only)
Eligibility:
- Lodging is only offered to out-of-state petitioners.
- Lodging is not guaranteed and is always subject to approval and availability, even if performance benchmarks are met.
Base lodging pay reduction:
- When lodging is covered, your pay is reduced by $1.00 per signature, per issue (petition) you are carrying for that week.
Definition of a “SET”:
- 1 SET = 1 voter signing each petition you are carrying.
- Example: If you are carrying 7 petitions and one voter signs all 7, that counts as 1 set (7 signatures).
- If you choose to carry fewer petitions, you must collect more total signatures to reach the same number of sets.
Weekly Expectations & Performance Tiers
(Weeks run Monday through Sunday and reset every week.)
- Minimum to keep lodging – 100 sets per week You must collect at least 100 sets in a single Monday–Sunday week.
If you do not hit 100 sets in any week, you lose lodging access and revert to standard street-price pay with no lodging going forward (unless re-approved later).
- Performance bump – 200 sets per week (must carry all petitions)If you are carrying all available petitions and collect 200 sets in a week:
- Your lodging reduction improves to $0.50 per signature, per issue for that respective week (instead of $1.00 off).
- Full street price – 300 sets per week If you collect 300 sets in a week:
- You receive full street price pay per petition (no lodging reduction) for that respective week, while still having lodging covered.
- Reset: All counts and lodging/pay adjustments reset every Monday.
Each week stands alone: your rate for one week does not carry over to the next.
