Sanitation Collection Driver

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The successful candidate will assist in maintaining County sanitation by operating collection trucks and performing various duties at the Solid Waste Management Facility.

• Operates vehicles in accordance with all DOT, state and local laws and regulations, as well as the County policy and procedures;
• Performs pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles;
• Works closely with route supervisor and notifies of any accidents or property damage;
• Follows route assignments daily as directed; notifies supervisor when unable to complete route assignment;
• Maintains and cleans vehicle interior and exterior;
• Inspects items in collection boxes and secures load prior to tarping;
• Cleans collection site pads under roll-off containers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL: Ability to read sufficiently well to understand addresses and determine direct or alternate routes from maps; keep records of receipt for all items delivered; perform basic arithmetic; follow oral and written directions; lift and move heavy packages and supplies. Ability to write sufficiently to understand and communicate. Deal courteously with the public. Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective safety measures for the protection of people, property, and institutions. Ability to pass a ride along road test evaluation.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Possess a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Ability to pass and adhere to required Department of Transportation (DOT) mandated drug & alcohol testing.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting, climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and occasionally requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non- weather), exposure to vibration and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
