Summary of Position
: The maintenance specialist is primarily responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of road signs in Pittsylvania County. This position also assists in performing general maintenance installation and repair services for Public Works projects and County buildings and grounds.

Essential Job Functions:
Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

  • Assists with the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of water and sanitary sewer lines, meters, fire-hydrants, pump stations, vehicles and equipment;
  • Assists with installing utility services and service taps;
  • Reads water meters in the field when necessary, checks meters for errors and repairs when necessary;
  • Operates Service Authority equipment (motorized and non) to include, but not limited to pumps and generators, lawn mowers, tapping machines, sewer jetter, equipment truck and dump truck;
  • Manually digs trenches and ditches, cleans sewer blockages; operates light and heavy equipment; uses a variety of hand and power tools, and material handling equipment in performing duties;
  • Responds to emergency situations as directed;
  • Investigate, respond to and resolve customer complaints and service request inquiries;
  • Marks Service Authority assets in the field to comply with VA811 (Miss Utility) program. This involves reviewing Service Authority as-built maps and accurately locating the assets in the field so assets are not damaged by other contractors;
  • Installation, maintenance and repair of road signs throughout the County;
  • Performs general maintenance work such as installation and repair of traffic signals and signs; trimming of grass, bushes, and trees; transportation of equipment for repair; installation of weather stripping and energy -saving devices; installation and repair of plumbing, HVAC, and electrical equipment and wiring including single and 3 phase, high and low voltage; and general maintenance on generators for stand-by power at buildings, tower sites, etc.;
  • Responsible for maintenance work at the County jail;
  • Performs service work on fire and safety alarm systems, kitchen and laundry equipment;
  • Performs carpentry work, both rough and finished;
  • Performs service work on chillers, steam and hot water boiler;
  • Industrial plumbing work on the sprinkler system and wet and dry system;
  • Detect faulty operations, defective material and report those and any unusual situations to proper supervision.
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service.
  • Available to work overtime, weekends, and on-call when required. When on-call, must respond to work within 30-minutes for water main breaks, pump failures and other emergencies.

Education and Experience:
Education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED.


Required Knowledge and Skill:
Capable of interacting courteously and effectively with the public and co-workers. The ability to work under minimum supervision. Understand warning labels and symbols. Accurately use measuring devices for cleaners and operate basic equipment as required in routine cleaning. Must be able to perform physical labor, and follow written and verbal directions. Ability to operate mechanical machinery and tools. Must possess a valid Virginia motor vehicle operator's license. Must be able to read county road maps. Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public. Ability to work under a minimum of supervision and exercise independent judgment. Ability to keep accurate and detailed records. Some knowledge of basic computer skills.


Certifications and licenses
: Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
