Culinary Services
The Performance Dietitian should have the following minimum qualifications:
The Team Dietitian will play a key role in optimizing the performance, health, and overall well-being of our athletes. The team dietitian will collaborate with Pittsburgh Penguins performance, medical, and culinary staff providing food service support, athlete education, and individualized fueling plans to promote performance, recovery, injury management, health, wellness, and career longevity.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Team Dietitian's duties include:
Culinary Services
- Coordinate and manage home facility food service operations, including menu development
- Coordinate travel nutrition including hotels, game, practice and airline catering
- Work with personal chefs and/or players’ significant others to ensure nutrition plans are followed at home
- Assess and monitor player dietary habits, hydration practices, body composition, blood biomarkers throughout the season
- Counsel athletes for optimal nutrition for training, competition, recovery, body composition management
- Develop and implement individualized nutrition and supplementation protocols to support performance and return-to-play
- Provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT) as needed, to help manage or treat medical conditions
- Have the ability to address nutritional challenges such as food allergies, deficiencies, and GI challenges
- Document nutrition interventions and evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition strategies towards meeting desired outcomes using the Nutrition Care Process
- Conduct body composition and hydration testing
- Develop and support the Penguins' fueling philosophy with education and resources for players at all stages throughout the athlete development pathway
- Responsible for supplement provision, purchasing, and inventory management
The Performance Dietitian should have the following minimum qualifications:
- Bachelors or Masters Degree in Nutrition
- Registered Dietitian (RDN) credential obtained by passing the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) exam.
- Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD)
- International Society for Kinanthropometry (ISAK) Level 1
- Hold current certification, credentialing and/or licensure by the appropriate governing body, in good standing, in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ local jurisdiction
- Provide services only within the defined scope of practice of such certification, credentialing and/or licensure
- In-depth knowledge of nutrition, biology, and physiological demands of high-performance athletes
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong criticial thinking skills and the ability to analyze and utilize information from diverse sources
- Skilled in teaching and educating athletes, coaches, and staff on nutrition-related topics
- Occasional travel with the team as needed
- Food service management in professional sports, including airline catering
- Experienced nutrition counselling skills, including in the area of disordered eating
- Experience providing culinary education, including athlete cooking classes
- Strong clinical nutrition background, and competence interpreting blood biomarkers
- Experience working with elite athletes through all stages of the athlete development pathway
