What are the responsibilities and job description for the Carpenter position at Pittsburg State University?
Pittsburg State University is accepting applications for a Carpenter. The primary function of the Carpenter is to perform activities related to the creation and upkeep of roofing systems, wooden furniture, office equipment, locksmith duties, masonry and facility maintenance.
Duties and Responsibilities of Position -
50% - Installs and/or repairs roofs, flashings, down spouts, and gutters; removes existing roofs; coats roofs; insures cap flashes are secure and caulk same; repairs expansion joints; repairs gravel stops, edgings, and fascia; repairs copings and parapets; inspects roofs for repair; identifies maintenance needs and reports to supervisor; opens clogged or frozen drains and down spouts. Plans, lays out, and constructs frame buildings, shelves, partitions, walls, ceilings, siding, paneling, doors and door frames, window frames, and wooden floors; installs formica tops to counters, desks and tables; performs cabinetmaking tasks; repairs and renovates buildings, offices and classrooms. Additional standards for this category include: good use of blueprints, drawings, and plans and able to spot errors; use good judgment in use and compatibility of new materials such as adhesives, caulks, woods, finishes, counter tops materials, and glue.
20% - Repairs, replaces and/or maintains curtains, shades, locks, door hardware and closers, window and door frames, venetian blinds, chairs, desks, bulletin boards, blackboards, other furniture, etc.; replaces portable bleacher and stadium seating; assembles new furniture and equipment; repairs and installs carpet, floor tile, and base; hangs new and replaces suspended ceilings; hangs pictures, signs, movie screens, paintings, coat racks, shelves, etc.; installs insulation; moves office furniture and equipment.
15% - Repairs cement floors, and steps; repairs stucco walls; delivers and hangs sheet rock; brick work; removes old concrete; build forms; pours concrete; finishes concrete floors, driveways, sidewalks, steps, etc; builds concrete block walls and pours parking blocks; exterior brick walls; installs holes in walls for doorways, electrical conduit, duct work piping, etc.; repairs and installs quarry and ceramic tile; sets memorial stones and plaques; waterproofs stone and brick walls; performs other miscellaneous masonry tasks.
5% - Plans, lays out, and constructs cabinetmaking projects such as furniture, bookcases, counters, bulletin boards, condiment carts, plaques, tables, door frames, large cabinets, desks, picture frames, musical instrument cases, benches, etc.; cuts and installs veneers; fabricates intricate joints and trim work; customizes work request for specialized equipment and furniture; performs lathe work such as legs, spindles, reproductions, turns, etc.
5% - Performs locksmith duties; installs, maintains, and repairs locks, cuts new keys; rebuilds old locks; installs and maintains hardware; sets up cores and keys using Best lock system; sets up and repairs combination locks on safes, lockers, storage cabinets, etc.
5% - Maintains shop equipment, tools, and materials; requisitions materials from storeroom; cleans shop area; drives vehicle to and from job site; performs paperwork tasks; operates backhoe, skid steer loader, tractor, trucks, and fork lift. Additional standards for this category: all materials, tools, and vehicles kept secured at all times; keep accurate records; no loss of keys, tools, or equipment; regular inspection of hand tools for normal wear, such as sharpness and bad cords; all shop and work areas safe at all times. Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience -
Required at Hire and Preferred Required Education and Experience at Hire
- High school diploma.
- Three years of related construction or carpentry work.

Appointment Duration: 12 months
Work Schedule: Full Time - Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
Salary Range: grade 6, $17.66 - $23.82 hourly
