Transportation Mechanic

 

Purpose:     Diagnose, adjust, and repair district vehicles, including school buses.

                                                                                                           

Reports to:          Director of Transportation

 

Pay Rate:  Based upon experience

 

Terms of Employment:       12 months, as needed 

 
   

 

 

Qualifications:

 

Educational Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid CDL License with required endorsements or be willing to attain.
  • Meet all State requirements for Bus Drivers, including Defensive Driving and First Aid Certification or be willing to meet.

 

Experience:

  • Complete required physical exam for Bus Drivers and 20 hours behind the wheel training.
  • Experience in school transportation preferred.
  • Knowledge of equipment used in bus maintenance.
  • Ability to plan and manage projects.
  • ASE Bus Mechanic Certification preferred.

 

General Expectations:

  • Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors, co-workers, teachers and students.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform responsibilities without necessity of close supervision.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the school district community
  • Ability to meet attendance standards to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to maintain a generally positive attitude.

Functions and Responsibilities:

Universal USD 250 Classified Standards:

  • Support the philosophy and mission of USD 250 and the value of education.
  • Comply with the privacy rights of students.
  • Safeguard confidential and/or sensitive information.
  • Communicate pleasantly and effectively with all the members of the school district and community.
  • Provide excellence in customer service both internally and externally.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace to insure a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Ensure that all activities conform to district, state, and federal guidelines.
  • React to change positively and productively.
  • Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose potential vehicle malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
  • Inspects buses and transportation equipment for the purpose of ensuring it is in a safe operating condition.
  • Maintains tools and/or equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in a safe operating condition.
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
  • Service bus and transportation equipment and perform scheduled preventative maintenance.
  • Substitutes for bus drivers when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director and Administration.

 

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions

  • Level 4 – Heavy Work
    • Exerting 50-100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25-50 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly.
  • Extended periods of sitting and/or standing.
  • Must be able to adapt to a fast-paced, multi-faceted work environment.
  • Must drive automobile.
  • Requires prolonged sitting or standing, frequent stooping, bending, reaching, kneeling, crawling, turning, climbing and balancing.
  • Must work indoors and outdoors, and in noisy and crowded environments year-round.
  • Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.
