Job Summary
PITS Environmental is a full-service environmental testing laboratory located in Millburn, New Jersey, specializing in water and soil analysis, microbiology, and indoor environmental quality testing. Our laboratory provides analytical services for potable water, building water systems, wastewater, soil, and indoor air and surface samples. We are currently seeking an Environmental Laboratory Analyst (Chemist) to join our growing team and contribute to our commitment to delivering accurate, reliable, and timely analytical results.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and analyze samples to quantitatively determine chemical and physical parameters in various matrices, including water, wastewater, and soil.
- Perform analytical and sample preparation procedures in accordance with EPA and APHA Standard Methods using instrumentation such as GC/MS, IC, ICP-MS, spectrophotometers, and mercury analyzers.
- Conduct routine laboratory activities including pipetting, volumetric measurements, and operation of analytical balances.
- Assist with equipment troubleshooting, routine maintenance, and general laboratory upkeep.
- Follow established SOPs, quality control procedures, and data validation requirements for each analytical method.
- Apply knowledge of NELAC and ISO/IEC 17025 quality systems in daily laboratory operations.
- Perform calculations, data conversions, and compile analytical results accurately.
- Prepare reagents, calibration standards, and perform sample extractions and digestions as required.
- Maintain a safe laboratory environment by properly handling chemicals, acids, solvents, and disposing of waste in accordance with regulations.
- Generate analytical reports and enter data into the Laboratory Information Management System.
- Support customer service activities by assisting with data interpretation and responding to technical inquiries.
- Perform quality control activities in accordance with the company's QA/QC program.
- Carry out administrative tasks including sample login, data entry, report scanning and distribution, and answering phone inquiries.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by laboratory management.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline (required).
- One to two years of laboratory experience working with analytical instrumentation such as IC, ICP-MS, and GC-MS.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment; self-motivated, adaptable, and results-driven.
- Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and work with minimal supervision.
- Proficient in computer-based data entry, documentation, and report generation.
