What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veteran Services Officer position at Pitkin County?
Assists military veterans and families to access human services’ programs and benefits from a variety of service providers.
Advises and assists US military veterans and dependents on eligibility and application procedures for a wide variety of federal, state, and local benefits and entitlements; reviews and processes forms and documents; performs duties in compliance with County, state, and federal rules; reviews, updates, and maintains a variety of files and records; provides outreach and advocacy services for the community.
Regularly interacts with Pitkin County veterans and community partners to advocate for veterans as well as conduct outreach to raise awareness about issues affecting the veteran population and increase engagement in activities and programs recognizing, supporting, and advocating for veterans.
Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
This position follows a sequence:
Level I:
Up to 1 year of experience serving customers.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Previous military service with honorable discharge required.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
Level II (in addition to Level I):
1-3 years of progressively responsible experience in the role.
Associates Degree in Human Services or related field preferred.
Level III (in addition to Level II):
3 years of progressively responsible experience in the role.
Bachelor's Degree in Human Services or related field preferred.
Knowledge Of:
County policies and procedures.
State and federal laws and regulations governing work performed.
Record keeping and records management rules and standards.
Skill In:
Applying governing rules and regulations.
Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, under pressure, and in emergency and stressful situations.
Interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and other regional agencies.
Utilizing standard personal computer software programs and specialized State and County software.
Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
