Commercial Door & Hardware Installer

Piper Carpentry LLC
Aurora, MO Full Time
POSTED ON 8/3/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 12/1/2026

Position Overview

Piper Carpentry is seeking an experienced Commercial Door & Hardware Specialist to join our growing team.

This is not an entry-level carpentry position. We're looking for someone who is highly knowledgeable in commercial door and hardware systems and can install, troubleshoot, adjust, and commission complex openings with minimal supervision.

Our projects are located throughout Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and surrounding states. Regional travel is required, with employees home daily or weekly depending on the project and the employee's preference. Travel pay options are available.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience with commercial doors, frames, finish hardware, electrified hardware, and life safety systems. They understand that a door opening is more than just installing hardware—they know how every component works together to provide security, accessibility, fire protection, and code compliance.

If you're the person other installers call when they can't get a door to operate correctly, we'd like to talk with you.

Responsibilities

Install and adjust:

  • Hollow metal and wood doors
  • Hollow metal frames (knock-down and welded)
  • Continuous hinges
  • Butt hinges
  • Pivot hinges
  • Cylindrical and mortise locks
  • Exit devices (rim, vertical rod, concealed vertical rod, mortise, alarmed, delayed egress, etc.)
  • Door closers
  • Surface and concealed overhead stops
  • Coordinators
  • Flush bolts
  • Door holders
  • Electric strikes
  • Magnetic locks
  • Electrified panic hardware
  • Electrified mortise and cylindrical locks
  • Power transfers
  • Request-to-exit devices
  • Card access hardware
  • Door position switches
  • Automatic door operators
  • Fire-rated opening components

You'll also:

  • Read and interpret architectural drawings, door schedules, hardware schedules, specifications, shop drawings, and hardware submittals.
  • Verify door handing, opening sizes, frame conditions, and installation requirements.
  • Coordinate with electricians, access control contractors, project managers, and superintendents when installing electrified openings.
  • Adjust doors for proper clearances, latch engagement, closer operation, ADA compliance, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Identify and resolve installation conflicts before they become project delays.
  • Troubleshoot complex hardware issues in the field with minimal supervision.
  • Ensure all installations comply with manufacturer requirements, fire and life safety codes, and project specifications.
  • Complete punch list work and final hardware adjustments.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who genuinely knows commercial doors and hardware—not someone who has only installed locksets or hung doors occasionally.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has extensive commercial door and hardware installation experience.
  • Understands how complete door opening systems function.
  • Can install, adjust, and troubleshoot virtually every type of commercial hardware.
  • Reads hardware schedules, submittals, and plans with confidence.
  • Can identify specification conflicts before installation.
  • Understands ADA requirements, fire-rated openings, and life safety requirements.
  • Is organized, detail-oriented, and dependable.
  • Can work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Takes pride in getting every opening operating exactly as intended.
  • Communicates professionally with project managers, superintendents, suppliers, manufacturers, and inspectors.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of commercial door and hardware installation experience required.
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial doors, frames, finish hardware, exit devices, door closers, electrified hardware, and access control hardware.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, door schedules, hardware schedules, shop drawings, specifications, and hardware submittals.
  • Experience with electrified hardware and access control integrations.
  • Strong understanding of ADA requirements, fire-rated openings, and life safety codes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair complex hardware issues in the field.
  • OSHA 10 Certification required.
  • Background check required.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Willingness to travel (regional travel required).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Manufacturer training or certifications from reputable commercial door and hardware manufacturers (such as ASSA ABLOY, Allegion, Dormakaba, or equivalent) are encouraged.
  • Experience coordinating directly with manufacturers to resolve installation questions.
  • Experience performing final hardware adjustments, punch lists, and project closeouts.
  • Experience working on healthcare, multifamily, hospitality, education, or other large commercial construction projects.

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay based on experience.
  • Health insurance stipend.
  • Paid holidays.
  • Paid time off.
  • Paid vacation after one year.
  • Travel pay options.
  • Home daily or weekly, depending on the project.
  • Prevailing wage opportunities.
  • Equipment certification.
  • Steady, year-round commercial work.
  • Opportunities for advancement.

Please Note

This position is intended for experienced commercial door and hardware professionals. Applicants should be proficient in reading hardware schedules and submittals and have advanced experience installing and troubleshooting commercial door hardware, including exit devices, door closers, and electrified hardware.

Residential door installation experience alone is not sufficient for this position.
