Associate Attorney – Medical Malpractice Defense
Piper & Bowers, PSC is seeking an associate attorney with 1–5 years of experience to join our medical malpractice defense practice. This position is well-suited for an attorney who wants meaningful litigation experience, direct responsibility, and the opportunity to develop strong courtroom, deposition, and trial skills in a professional litigation setting.
Our firm represents healthcare providers and institutions in medical malpractice and healthcare-related litigation. The associate attorney will work closely with experienced litigators on all phases of case preparation and defense.
Responsibilities
The associate attorney’s responsibilities will include:
Legal research and analysis of medical malpractice, civil procedure, evidence, damages, expert witness, and healthcare-related issues.
Drafting pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery, correspondence, mediation statements, and other litigation documents.
Assisting with and participating in motion practice, hearings, and courtroom appearances.
Preparing and responding to written discovery.
Reviewing, analyzing, and summarizing medical records, expert reports, deposition testimony, and case materials.
Preparing for and attending depositions of parties, witnesses, healthcare providers, and expert witnesses.
Assisting with case strategy, expert witness preparation, and trial preparation.
Participating in trials, mediations, settlement conferences, and other litigation proceedings.
Communicating professionally with clients, opposing counsel, experts, court personnel, and witnesses.
Qualifications
Candidates should have:
A law degree from an accredited law school.
Admission to practice law in Kentucky, or eligibility for prompt admission.
1–5 years of litigation experience preferred. Experience in medical malpractice, healthcare litigation, insurance defense, or civil litigation is helpful but not required.
Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
Good judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage deadlines.
A strong work ethic and willingness to take ownership of assignments.
Professionalism, reliability, and strong interpersonal skills.
The ability to work both independently and as part of a litigation team.
About the Position
This position offers the opportunity to gain hands-on litigation experience in a focused medical malpractice defense practice. The associate attorney will receive mentorship and guidance while also being given increasing responsibility as experience develops.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation will be commensurate with experience, but within the range of $65,000-$80,000 per year. Benefits and additional details may be discussed during the interview process.
