Description:

To provide students with activities and instruction which develop awareness of a variety of musical forums and maximizes personal musical skill development. To prepare students for appropriate assessments while encouraging district and state goals related to reading, writing, math, communication, and performance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide high-quality music instruction to elementary school students.
  • Collaborate with the middle school music department.
  • Recognize individual student learning needs and develop strategies to address those needs.
  • Select appropriate repertoire and develop lesson plans that align with the Washington State Arts Learning Standards through multiple strategies for instruction.
  • Plan, prepare, and conduct performances for concerts, assemblies, festivals, community events, and musical field trips collaboratively with school administration.
  • Support and lead musical enrichment opportunities for students.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and inventory of instruments and equipment.
  • Maintain musical instruments, equipment, and program supplies.
  • Manage student behavior and maintain appropriate classroom management strategies in order to ensure a safe and productive learning environment.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Effectively use multiple means of communication: face-to-face, email, phone, Parent Square.
  • Organize and supervise student participation in extracurricular music activities, including rehearsals, trips, and competitions.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive classroom culture that supports diverse learners.
  • Evaluate each pupil’s growth in knowledge and skills in course(s) taught.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress, and attend IEPs and 504 meetings for students.
  • Assist in articulation and evaluation of the total music program.
  • Participate in district and building professional development and collaborate with staff to support school goals and district initiatives.
  • Use multiple student data elements to modify instruction and improve student learning.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in writing and oral communication skills.
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without accommodations.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate.
  • Proper endorsement(s) in assigned areas, Highly Qualified in Fine Arts/Music.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in implementing a prescribed curriculum.
  • Demonstrated evidence of classroom management skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to work cooperatively with administration and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate appropriate technology into the class curriculum.
  • Strong skills and background in instructional methods and strategies, including extensive training in Instrumental Music.
  • Proficiency in reading musical scores and ability to direct and conduct various Bands at various ages and abilities, particularly at grades 6-8.
  • Instrumental proficiency and knowledge of all wind and percussion instruments.
  • Piano keyboard competency preferred.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Washington teaching certificate and endorsement/credential for the instruction level of this position
  • Job related experience along with knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods and Washington state learning standards
  • Ability to perform a variety of specialized tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative relationships with students, parents, other school personnel, and meet schedules and deadlines
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills including the ability to professionally and respectfully engage in conversations with students, parents, and staff
  • Experience successfully using assessment data for instructional decision-making to improve student learning.

Pay/Benefits

Salary schedule is starting rate BA0/0-$63,842 to MA90/16-$120,331 depending on experience and transcripts.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation-Eligible employees are required to be a member of the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems Plan. Employees also have the ability to participate in tax deferred 403(b) and 457 Deferred Compensation Plans (DCP). These are supplemental retirement savings programs that allow you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options. To enroll in an eligible 403(b) plan, employees must consult with their own financial planner that is an approved vendor.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Effective June 11, 1992, pursuant to Public Law 92544 all new employees must complete a satisfactory fingerprint and sexual misconduct background check. All employment is considered temporary until receipt of satisfactory check. Proof that the fingerprinting process has begun must be supplied to Human Resources prior to the first day of employment.
