JOB TITLE: Pre-K-12 Counselor

 

REPORTS TO: Building Principal or designee

 

UNIT CLASSIFICATION: Sunnyside Education Association

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

As a member of the district school counseling staff, a counselor contributes to student success in visible and meaningful ways.  The counselor provides activities and services that develop the academic, career and personal/social competencies of students, consults with teachers, staff and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students, and advances the mission of the school/district.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Delivery System:

  • School Guidance Curriculum
  • Plans, organizes and delivers the school counseling program.
  • Implements the school guidance curriculum through the use of effective instructional skills and careful planning of structured group sessions for all students.
  • Implements the district’s School Counseling Program by supporting the program philosophy, by utilizing data, by delivering student-centered standard-based services, and by managing resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Contributes to a Pre-K-12 guidance curriculum that integrates the Washington State Learning Goals, state graduation requirements, and ASCA standards for academic, career and personal/social development.
  • Provides individual and small group counseling and classroom activities that enhance academic success, career planning and personal/social adjustment.
  • Individual Student Planning
  • Implements the individual planning component by guiding individuals and groups of students and their parents or guardians through the development of educational and career plans.
  • Facilitates and coordinates social, personal, and career planning to assist students and their parents in the Pre-K-12 schooling process.
  • Responsive Services
  • Provides responsive services through the effective use of individual and small-group counseling, consultation and referral skills.
  • Facilitates referrals for students/families to community resources. 
  • System Support
  • Provides system support through effective school counseling program management and support for other educational programs.
  • Participates in building-level School Improvement Planning processes, including data collection and analysis, to improve school climate and enhance student success.

 

Management System:

  • Uses various organizational processes and tools to ensure the management of the school counseling program is organized, concrete, clearly delineated and reflective of the school's needs.
  • Collects and analyzes data to guide program direction and emphasis.
  • Monitors the students on a regular basis as they progress in school.
  • Monitors, evaluates and continually improves the School Counseling Program.

  • Promotes academic success of every student.
  • Promotes equity and access for every student.
  • Takes a leadership role within the counseling department, the school setting and the community.
  • Understands reform issues and works to close the achievement gap.
  • Collaborates with teachers, parents and the community to promote academic success of students.
  • Builds effective teams by encouraging collaboration among all school staff.
  • Uses data to recommend systemic change in policy and procedures that limit or inhibit academic achievement.
  • Pursues professional growth that maintains state-of-the-art knowledge and skills in school counseling.
  • Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling program.

 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to building principal.  Interacts with administrators, teachers, support staff, students, and parents.

 

Develop and maintain positive and cooperative interactions and communication with school staff, students, parents, and the community.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work is performed primarily indoors with some requirements for outdoor supervision and activities.  The individual is required to frequently stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel and crouch.  There is occasionally reaching and lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Successful job incumbents will demonstrate a level of knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed below.

 

Education and Experience:  

Masters Degree required

ESA Certificate in Counseling required

Demonstrated experience working with youth

Knowledge of relevant technology.

 

Licenses/Special Requirements

Washington State ESA Certification with appropriate endorsement.

Valid Washington State Drivers license or photo identification.

Social Security Card.

WSP/FBI fingerprint/background clearance.
