- Follow lesson plans left by the absent teacher
- Attend to the physical and emotional needs of students in the classroom
- Adhere to the school’s policies and procedures
- Maintain a positive learning environment for students
- Effectively manage the classroom
- Use appropriate disciplinary measures when necessary
- Communicate with the regular classroom teacher and school administration as needed
- Possess a valid teaching substitute certificate
- Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter and best practices in teaching
