Job

Job Summary Pinnacle Paving is looking for an experienced Asphalt Screed Operator to join our paving crew in Kalispell, Montana. This is not an entry-level position—we're looking for someone who understands asphalt, knows what a quality mat looks like, and can operate the screed confidently without needing constant direction. We perform a mix of residential, commercial, subdivision, and municipal paving throughout Northwest Montana, and we take pride in producing work that looks as good as it performs. Our Screed Operator is a critical part of that standard. The right person understands that running a screed is more than standing on the back of a paver. You need to be able to read the mat, control depth and slope, manage extensions, work around joints and transitions, communicate with the paver operator and ground crew, and make adjustments before a small problem becomes an expensive one. We're looking for someone who: - Has proven asphalt paving and screed experience - Understands proper depth, slope, crown, drainage, joints, transitions, and tie-ins - Can recognize segregation, poor head of material, improper feed, tearing, checking, or other mat issues and react accordingly - Communicates effectively with the paver operator, truck drivers, roller operator, and ground crew - Takes pride in producing a smooth, consistent, professional finished product - Is willing to work alongside the crew when needed—not someone who believes their only job is standing on the screed - Shows up dependable, works safely, takes direction, and can also think for themselves - Understands that asphalt is time-sensitive, expensive, and unforgiving, and treats every load accordingly We're building a crew of professionals who want to be good at what they do—not simply collect hours. If you're an experienced screed operator who takes pride in paving and wants to be part of a growing asphalt company in Northwest Montana, we'd like to hear from you.

Responsibilities & Performance Expectations As a Screed Operator at Pinnacle Paving, you are responsible for more than operating the screed. You are a key member of the paving crew and directly responsible for the quality, appearance, and efficiency of every project we complete.

Primary Responsibilities:

- Safely and proficiently operate the asphalt paver screed on residential, commercial, subdivision, and municipal paving projects.

- Set and maintain proper mat depth, width, slope, crown, and transitions according to project requirements. - Continuously monitor the asphalt mat and make adjustments before quality problems develop.

- Maintain a consistent head of material and work closely with the paver operator to maintain steady, uninterrupted paving whenever possible.

- Properly manage screed extensions, end gates, grade controls, automation, and other screed functions.

- Produce clean starts, stops, joints, tie-ins, tapers, approaches, and transitions.

- Recognize segregation, tearing, checking, improper depth, poor texture, drainage concerns, or other paving problems and communicate them immediately.

- Coordinate with the paver operator, roller operator, laborers, truck drivers, and crew leadership to keep production moving.

- Help establish proper paving sequence and anticipate upcoming obstacles instead of waiting until the paver reaches them.

- Assist with handwork, luting, shoveling, cleaning, traffic control, equipment preparation, or other crew responsibilities when needed.

- Participate in daily equipment inspections and immediately report mechanical or operational concerns.

- Keep the screed, paver work area, tools, and support equipment clean and job-ready. - Assist with end-of-day cleaning and preparation so equipment is ready for the following shift.

The Pinnacle Standard We expect our Screed Operator to help set the pace and standard for the people working around them. That means:

- Quality comes first. If something doesn't look right, speak up and correct it. We don't knowingly pave over problems.

- Stay ahead of the paver. Asphalt doesn't wait. Good paving requires anticipating what is coming next.

- Take ownership. Don't walk past a problem because it technically belongs to someone else's position.

- Work as a crew. When your immediate task is handled, look for where the crew needs help.

- Communicate early. Problems are much cheaper to solve before asphalt is on the ground.

- Respect the equipment. Keep it clean, inspect it, grease it when required, and report problems before they become breakdowns.

- Respect the customer and jobsite. Maintain a professional appearance, attitude, and work environment.

- Bring solutions, not drama. We expect professional communication even when the day gets difficult.

- Be dependable. The paving operation depends on every position being present, prepared, and ready to work.

- Never sacrifice safety for production. We work with heavy equipment, trucks, hot asphalt, and moving traffic. Everyone is responsible for maintaining a safe work environment. At Pinnacle Paving, job titles define your primary responsibility—not the only work you're willing to do. We expect everyone, from laborers to operators to leadership, to contribute wherever necessary to safely produce a high-quality job. We want people who take pride in being able to drive past a project years later and say, “We paved that.”
