Pima County Shooting Sports at the Southeast Regional Park (SERP) is looking for a Parks Technician I to join the Team. This position performs routine trades or craftsman duties above the Trade Maintenance Helper level, maintaining and repairing park facilities, grounds, and equipment. Also, participates in construction or renovation activities in parks. The work requires manual labor and the use of hand and powered tools, equipment or vehicles and frequently involves repetitive individual tasks in a variety of work settings in an outdoor environment.

Essential Functions

As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class. Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

  • Cuts, trims, edges, seeds, fertilizes, stripes ball field and leisure turf;
  • Structurally prunes, shapes and maintains urban forest and ground vegetation;
  • Performs minor repairs and adjustments to plumbing and irrigation systems;
  • Operates ride-on equipment and utilizes powered maintenance and construction equipment/tools ;
  • Performs operator-level inspections, servicing, maintenance and security of assigned tools, equipment and vehicles;
  • Applies paints, varnish, stains, and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixtures;
  • Stores, handles, applies and disposes of hazardous materials required to complete work or generated by work assignments;
  • Collection and disposal of trash;
  • Maintains and uses safety and personal protective equipment;
  • Explains rules, regulations or procedures to the public and/or vendors;
  • Some positions may be assigned to a natural resource park setting, whereby, maintenance may include wildlife drinkers, ponds, equestrian, camp facilities, trails, habitat restoration, erosion control and invasive species.

Minimum Qualifications

Six months of experience performing duties in landscape, grounds maintenance, arborist, equipment operator, general handyman or similar duties in a specific skill, craft, vocation, trade or operational area of employment.

(Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)

Or

Three months of experience within Pima County as a Parks Helper or other helper level position.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  • Minimum one (1) year experience working at a public shooting range and/or shooting sports program.
  • Minimum six (6) months of construction experience in the building repair and maintenance of target holding equipment, including archery targets.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in a customer service role.

Selection Procedure

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Supplemental Information

Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record.

Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. This position will require a post-job offer physical and/or drug screen. This position will require post-job offer proof of immunization(s) or immunization(s) and/or a TB screening.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: Lifting heavy objects, operating machinery and equipment, and performing repetitive tasks such as mowing, pruning, and planting. Action Activity - bending, climbing, kneeling, reaching, squatting and stooping; Motion Activity - grasping; Hearing Activity - in noisy areas, on a radio, behind themselves, and fine movement; Speaking Activity - in person, on the phone, on a radio; Vision - must be able operate motor vehicle, operate machinery, operate forklift/power industrial equipment; distinguish colors, depth perception and peripheral vision. Frequently required to lift, push or pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds.

Working Conditions: Various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
