The Humanities and Social Sciences division at Pima Community College serves as the core foundation for General Education, critical thinking, and global awareness across the college. Designed around seamless university transfer pathways, the division allows students to dive into diverse fields such as anthropology, history, psychology, sociology, political science, philosophy, ethnic studies, and gender studies.
Through flexible learning options, including in-person, hybrid, and fully online coursework via the top-ranked PimaOnline platform, students typically pursue an Associate of Arts (Liberal Arts) degree that sets them up for long-term success. Additionally, the Division includes certificates for direct employment in Field Archaeology and Social Services. The division is innovative and community-focused, housing experiential learning opportunities such as the college's Archaeology Center, Study Abroad programs, a public Vote Center, and the Aztec Resource Center Food Pantry.
About the Archaeology Field Training Program and the Archaeology Center
Pima Community College’s (PCC’s) Field Archaeology training program has played an important role in the archaeological community of southern Arizona for the past five decades. PCC graduates are widely known for their practical knowledge and hands-on skills and are consistently successful in the industry. The Program is open-access and affordable, providing an entry point for underrepresented students who might not otherwise pursue a career in archaeology. The Field Training program is home-based in the Archaeology Center which supports classes with full and part-time staff, equipment, software and student tutoring.
About The Position
The position is available for the 2026-27 academic year as a 1- year provisional contract. Faculty teach and work a set schedule over a nine-month academic year, August–May, that could include day, evening, and weekend duties.
The faculty member in this position will be primarily responsible for teaching hands-on classes in archaeological methods that are part of Pima Community College’s Field Archaeology Certificate Program. These include field and laboratory classes in archaeological survey and excavation methods, artifact analysis, GPS use, and archaeological mapping techniques. The faculty member might also teach lecture, hybrid, or online classes in archaeology or other subfields of anthropology. The faculty member will serve as the Principal Investigator for archaeological projects undertaken by the field classes and/or the Archaeology Center.
Faculty may be asked to teach on various campuses, in-person, online, hybrid, and virtual learning environments. Divisions may employ emerging approaches such as fast-track, IBEST, and dual enrollment as appropriate. Course scheduling may include daytime, evenings, and/or weekends.

Degrees and courses qualifying for Pima Community College teaching certification must be from a regionally accredited college or university. Applicants currently in progress for a degree or additional coursework to meet the minimum qualifications must have the degree conferred and/or coursework completed by May 2026.
A degree from any college outside of the United States (even if the transcript is in English) may need to be evaluated by a foreign transcript evaluation service. Pima Community College requires that applicants use an evaluation agency that is a member of NACES or AACRAO's corporate partners

Duties & Responsibilities
- Full-time faculty are expected to teach the equivalent of 15 load hours per semester
- Facilitate learning and help students achieve academic success and retention
- Evaluate and assess student performance
- Provide academic advising
- Monitor and continuously improve instruction to ensure Student Learning Outcomes are met on a classroom, discipline/program, and College level
- Evaluate and revise course outlines and course materials
- Maintain competency and currency in the teaching fields
- Engage in professional development in current and emerging instructional approaches
- Serve actively as a member of the department and discipline groups
- Participate in fostering partnerships that strengthen educational opportunities in response to community needs
- Represent the department and/or campus on college-wide committees
- Work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students and utilize a collegial style in all forms of communication
- Master’s degree in the field of study OR
- Master’s degree in any discipline and a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the field of study.
The Selected Candidate Will
- Have a specialization in Archaeology
- Be qualified as a Principal Investigator (PI) in the state of Arizona under the criteria of the Arizona State Museum and provide documentation of such qualification. Or, if not already a Principal Investigator in Arizona, explain in detail how their experience meets each of the criteria listed in the " Policy on Qualifications for Principal Investigators " document found on the Archaeological Principal Investigator Qualifications page on the Arizona State Museum website.
- Demonstrate experience working with staff on projects which require a cooperative team-oriented effort
- Have professional experience in archaeology, outside of teaching, that includes experience supervising others in an archaeological field and/or laboratory setting
- Be able to use scientific instruments and application software appropriate to archaeological field and/or laboratory settings
- Work a flexible schedule including afternoons and evenings as needed to meet student demand
- Possibly work at more than one Pima Community College Campus, depending on need
- Experience with innovative teaching methodologies
- Experience teaching online courses and/or alternative instructional formats
- Experience using a Learning Management System, preferably D2L Brightspace

- Ability to teach a broad range of courses in archaeological methods, including archaeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, GPS usage, and archaeological mapping, including hands-on instruction in a field setting.
- Ability to also teach lecture, hybrid, or online classes in archaeology or other subfields of anthropology.
- Ability to adapt and modify instruction based on the student instructional needs and learning styles, including working with accommodations and accessibility
- Knowledge of appropriate and effective use of assessment information to improve instruction
- Evaluation of students' educational progress: ability to maintain high instruction and learning standards and assess students' academic progress in meeting course objectives and student learning outcomes
- Teaching in multiple modalities such as in person, online, virtual, hyflex and hybrid. All courses require the use of D2L and knowledge of curriculum development, course design, and delivery
- Knowledge of the resources available to students to assist them with academic and personal challenges, and ability to help students access those resources, skilled in providing academic advising
- Knowledge of diverse community college student populations, and the ability to address diversity in effective instructional practice and student learning
- Knowledge and appreciation for the Community College mission
