Our programs and services are grounded in the current national standards of the American Association of School Librarians and the work of thought leaders in the field of diverse and inclusive literature for children.

We further these principles by:

  • Providing access to a wide variety of resources to support learning and to inspire the imagination.

  • Working in partnership with faculty to support and enhance teaching and learning.

  • Promoting reading as a way to learn about ourselves and others, and as a way to see our own experiences reflected in literature.

  • Teaching critical thinking skills to develop passionate learners and responsible, agile information users.

Core Responsibilities

  • Promote a school-wide reading culture through reading promotion displays, materials such as thematic reading lists, and literature enrichment experiences such as book groups.

  • Share responsibility for daily operations of the library.

  • Maintain circulation, patron, and materials records using Alexandria library software.

  • Assist with print collection maintenance and processing of new books.

  • Support a robust parent/guardian volunteer program.

Information specialist

  • Match students and teachers with resources that meet their informational, research, leisure, or educational needs.

  • Create customized resource guides for student inquiry/research projects.

  • Assist in the selection of products and services, such as subscription databases and print materials, which benefit student learning and research and support students’ leisure reading interests.

Instructional partner

  • Together with head librarians, plan and provide learning opportunities to faculty/staff in the areas of library resources, digital literacy skills, ethical information use, and evaluating instructional materials through a culturally inclusive lens.

  • Work with head librarians to plan and teach weekly PreK - grade 4 Library Time sessions.

  • Collaboratively co-teach and provide individual assistance during content-area class visits for inquiry projects and reading unit support.

In addition, this position will share in responsibilities associated with the position or with membership on the faculty such as weekly duties and participation in faculty meetings, special events, and outreach programs.

Desired Qualities and Qualifications

  • Strong interest in working with students from age 4 to 14.

  • Current knowledge of children’s and young adult literature.

  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate positive working relationships with students, parents/guardians, faculty, and staff.

  • Competence with Google Apps for Education and library management software.

  • High level of emotional intelligence, flexibility, and curiosity.

  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to work autonomously when needed.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

  • Desire to work in a dynamic, collaborative, and joyful independent school environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Demonstrated commitment to libraries through work experience and/or coursework.
