POSITION: Speech Language Pathologist LOCATION: Local School, as assigned REPORTS TO: Principal FLSA STATUS: Exempt TERMS: 187-Day appointment compensated in accordance with the board-approved salary schedule

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology, Communication Disorders (speech-language emphasis), Communicative Disorders (speech-language emphasis), or a similarly titled area that is consistent and acceptable for Speech Pathology to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Experience in special education and knowledge of special education policies and procedures is required

JOB GOAL:

To assist the district in appropriate identification and evaluation and maintain compliance for the pre-referral, special education, and gifted education processes so as to create a culture of intellectual curiosity where all students have ownership over their learning and are inspired to think, innovate, and create.

  • Solicit and incorporate the voice of students concerning their learning.

  • Value and collaborate with the community and global experts to create challenging, authentic, and meaningful learning experiences and projects for students, including the use of mentors, internships, apprenticeships, field trips, etc.

  • Design, redesign, and facilitate challenging, authentic, and meaningful work that appeals to students' motives, interests, and learning styles, that accomplishes the desired learning outcomes and IEP goals.

  • Value and encourage students to learn any time and any place.

  • Serve as an advocate for students, promote self-advocacy, and view failure as a valuable part of the learning process that occurs when students challenge themselves.

  • Use a variety of tools to measure students' engagement, assess students' learning, and report progress data for all student goals in the IEP.

  • Demonstrate appropriate use of various forms of technology to maintain accurate records, communicate, and enhance instruction.

  • Maintain communication and partner with parents, related service providers, general education teachers, counselors, administrators, and community agencies (as appropriate) to ensure compliance with the provision of services and promote student success.

As Role Model and Leader:

  • Identify through Vision/Hearing Communication Screening all students in the assigned population who are at risk for Vision/Hearing/Communication disorders.

  • Provide a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, language, and hearing impairment through Speech/Language/Hearing diagnostic procedures.

  • Maintain a thorough tracking system of identification process and referrals for Speech/Language services for the assigned population.

  • Train school personnel to implement appropriate referral procedures.

  • Attend all Speech Therapy Eligibility Determination Committee Meetings.

  • Maintain up-to-date individualized educational programs and progress reports.

  • Provide for the advancement of records when students move from one school to another.

  • Coordinate IEP annual reviews for Speech/Language with teachers in other exceptionalities.

  • Maintain prescribed procedures when referring students to other agencies and specialists.

  • Provide information, support, and counseling to parents when appropriate.

  • Actively participate in prescribed teacher duties at the base school.

  • Use prescribed recording processes and procedures.

  • Report programmatic needs as they are identified.

  • Provide a therapeutic program to meet the individual needs of speech and/or hearing handicapped children.

  • Keep thorough ongoing records for each individual student receiving services.

  • Serve as a consultant to teachers and other school staff members.

  • Coordinate with the principal, teachers, and program supervisor on the scheduling of students for therapy.

  • Coordinate referral of individual students to other agencies and specialists as appropriate.

  • Embrace and promote the school system's mission, vision, beliefs, and goals.

  • Abide by and promote high ethical standards and adhere to the Alabama Code of Ethics for Educators.

  • Complete all special education paperwork accurately, according to regulations, and adhere to specified deadlines.

  • Collaborate with appropriate agencies to develop appropriate transition plans for students of transition age.

  • Lead professional learning, mentor aspiring teachers, conduct action research, share expertise, and contribute to the field of education.

  • Fulfill professional responsibilities beyond those exhibited in the classroom to include participation in school programs, school and system program improvement efforts, and community and parent groups.

  • Performs other duties as required by school and system leadership.

EVALUATION: Job performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Pike Road Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
