JOB DESCRIPTION/PERFORMANCE

JOB TITLE: Laboratory Assistant-Phlebotomist

DEPARTMENT: Laboratory

REPORTS TO: Manager of Laboratory

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Must be a high school graduate or equivalent; training in pathology laboratory preferred but not required.

Experience: On-the-job training under direct supervision of qualified technicians, technologists, or experienced phlebotomists. To utilize the hospital’s electronic data systems, individuals must have average typing skills and be comfortable working with a computer keyboard and mouse.

Physical: Normal hospital environment. Exposure to biological hazards via arterial and venous punctures. Close eye work. Hearing within normal range. Oral communication with patients. Operates computer terminals and printers, centrifuges, lab refrigerators and freezers, and telephone. Continuous standing and walking. Lifting and carrying up to 10 lbs. Occasional pushing/pulling up to 15 lbs.

JOB SUMMARY:

The phlebotomist will perform routine venipunctures and capillary punctures and other related work when fully qualified as evidenced by the personnel training checklist, assisting in requisitioning and distributing supplies, collection, and terminal cleaning at the end of the shift.
