Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Area Meat Manager to oversee and strengthen meat department operations across assigned store locations. This role is responsible for driving sales growth, controlling shrink, improving operational efficiency, maintaining product quality, and ensuring strong execution within the meat department.
The ideal candidate must have hands-on meat department experience, strong knowledge of fresh meat operations, and the ability to lead teams through accountability, training, inventory management, merchandising, and profitability-focused execution.
This is a leadership role for someone who understands both the operational and financial side of the meat business.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operations of assigned meat departments
- Drive meat department sales growth through merchandising, promotions, presentation, and product mix
- Monitor department profitability, margins, inventory levels, labor usage, and operational performance
- Analyze purchasing, production, and sales trends to improve financial performance
- Reduce shrink, waste, markdowns, and unnecessary product loss
- Ensure proper cutting, trimming, packaging, rotation, and freshness standards
- Train, coach, and hold meat department employees accountable for performance and standards
- Develop production plans based on sales trends and seasonal demand
- Maintain strong in-stock conditions while controlling overproduction
- Conduct regular department audits and operational reviews
- Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, OSHA, and company standards
- Monitor pricing accuracy, case presentation, signage, and merchandising quality
- Work closely with store leadership to improve department execution and customer satisfaction
- Support hiring, scheduling, and performance management within meat departments
- Identify opportunities to increase basket size and customer traffic through meat promotions and value offerings
- Assist in building operational SOPs and performance standards for meat department teams
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of meat department management experience required
- Previous supermarket or grocery meat department experience strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of meat cutting operations, inventory control, ordering, yields, and shrink management
- Experience managing department financials, margins, and profitability
- Ability to read and analyze sales reports, inventory reports, and operational metrics
- Strong leadership and team accountability skills
- Ability to work in fast-paced retail environments
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation requirements
- Flexible schedule including weekends and holidays when required
- Ability to travel between store locations as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Multi-store or area-level meat department oversight experience
- Experience improving department performance and operational efficiency
- Strong merchandising and promotional planning skills
- Bilingual abilities are a plus, but not required
