Job Summary
The Nurse Manager, is responsible for the daily operation and clinical supervision of the staff within the Department of Nursing. This role provides both clinical and administrative oversight of all activities in the Inpatient Service, working closely with the Director to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care that meets regulatory agency standards and utilizes evidence-based clinical management.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and staff.
- Model professional, courteous, and appropriate interactions at all times.
- Uphold and further the hospital’s positive public image.
- Implement hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory codes as they pertain to the department.
- Oversee unit operations and management in collaboration with the Director.
- Coordinate interdisciplinary performance improvement activities and utilize appropriate benchmarks.
- Prepare and assemble data and reports for regulatory agencies, including NY State OMH, NY Department of Health, DOHMH, and ACS (as applicable).
- Review and monitor admissions and discharges for appropriate clinical management and discharge planning.
- Gather performance improvement data and ensure compliance for regulatory surveys (DOH, JCAHO).
- Manage budgeting, supply, and inventory maintenance.
- Provide operational leadership on a 24-hour basis.
- Ensure PCS Scope of Service, Philosophy of Nursing, and Ethical Standards are met in patient care delivery.
- Oversee patient care areas to ensure clinical needs and competencies are met.
- Provide administrative coverage for the Nursing Department as needed.
- Demonstrate respect, professionalism, and a commitment to ongoing professional growth.
- Participate in continuing education and stay current with regulatory trends.
- Monitor and facilitate compliance with NYSDOH, JCAHO, and other regulatory requirements.
- Innovate and implement best practices in care.
- Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director and/or Sr. Vice President for Patient Care Services.
- Develop team and service HCAPS, outcome improvement, and communication plans.
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum five (5) years as a Registered Nurse.
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience in a leadership role.
- Strong critical thinking, mathematical, and computer skills; team oriented.
- Knowledge of quality improvement models, processes, and tools in healthcare settings.
- Experience with CQI and Root Cause Analysis.
- Demonstrated competence in leadership, budgeting, and administration.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Clinical competency in applicable specialty.
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking, hearing).
- Ability to use electronic record systems and healthcare/billing systems.
- Physically demanding role: prolonged periods of standing, walking, reaching; must be able to lift/carry up to 35 lbs. routinely and up to 100 lbs. to assist with patient movement.
- Exposure to adverse conditions: bloodborne pathogens, communicable diseases, chemical/radiation hazards, physical hazards, and repetitive motions.
- Manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and corrected vision/hearing required.
- Flexibility with working hours and on-call availability.
Required Education
- Graduate of an accredited Nursing school (BSN required).
Preferred Education
- Master’s degree in nursing preferred.
Required Certifications & Licensure
- Licensed and currently registered as a Professional Nurse in New York State1.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
