Police Officer

Summary

The Police Officer is primarily responsible for patrolling, investigating, and maintaining emergency response readiness on behalf of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority (PTAA), its property, tenants, and facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Patrol PTAA property in a police vehicle or on foot; check doors and windows; inspect security doors, gates, and other secure areas; detect unusual conditions and report them to the appropriate contact; report dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions
• Respond to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, disputes, and loud and disruptive behavior; complete calls by determining true nature of the situation and taking appropriate legal and procedural action
• Investigate traffic accidents; issue traffic citation; direct traffic and participate in other routine and emergency operation activities
• Perform investigations of accidents or other incidents through observation, questioning witnesses, and gathering physical evidence; perform arrests and process criminal suspects; present findings in court as needed
• Routinely work with highly confidential material such as criminal background information, confidential law enforcement reports and intelligence bulletins, personnel files, financial records, etc.
• Operate a two-way radio to receive instructions and information from or to report information to communications center or coworkers; maintain vehicle, weapons, and other equipment in standard working order
• Monitor adherence to parking and traffic regulations and issue tickets for violations; assist stranded motorists
• Oversee crowd control services when required, such as heavy travel days and special events
• Complete assignments and act with a high level of professional ethics, personal integrity, and exceptional judgment
• Document all activities and prepare written reports as required by departmental policy
• Advise the general public on regulations and laws and give information and directions to visitors
• Enforce Security Directives from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), such as performing badge checks
• Other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of law enforcement operations, functions, procedures, and legal processes
• Working knowledge of law enforcement and investigative principles, practices, methods, and equipment
• Working knowledge of state and federal laws, TSA/FAA requirements, local ordinances, and law enforcement policies
• Demonstrated proficiency in usage of firearms and other law enforcement equipment
• Demonstrated ability to use a two-way radio to receive instructions and information from or to report information to communications center or coworkers
• Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret, and apply applicable laws and regulations
• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and execute decisions in both day-to-day and emergency situations
• Demonstrated ability to present effective court testimony
• Demonstrated ability to maintain a flexible schedule and adapt to changes based on staffing needs
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms
• Demonstrated ability to adhere to goals and objectives to ensure the department meets its vision and mission
• Demonstrated ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports and records of law enforcement activities
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with other law enforcement agencies, coworkers, supervisors, and employees in other departments
• Demonstrated ability to establish rapport with members of the general public

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 1 year of experience in Law Enforcement as a sworn officer
• Possess and maintain a valid Basic Law Enforcement training certification (BLET) provided by the North Carolina Justice Education and Training Standards Commission
• Demonstrated leadership, problem solving, and excellent customer service skills
• Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination
• Hold and maintain valid U.S. driver's license with 3 years of verifiable driving history

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Certifications

• Possess an associate’s degree or degree from an accredited college or university
• Prior experience with law enforcement applications such as eWarrants, Brazos, CJLEADS, and WatchGuard Evidence Library
• Possess or be eligible to receive a North Carolina Department of Justice Intermediate Law Enforcement Certificate

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

• This position is considered essential to emergency operations and may be required to respond during emergencies, disasters, staffing shortages, or other operational contingencies outside of normal work hours to support departmental and airport operations
• Successfully complete required annual physical ability evaluations as established by department policy
• Must meet medical and physical fitness standards established by department policy and be capable of:
  • Performing all essential functions of a Police Officer
  • Supervising and participating in emergency operations in hazardous environments
  • Lifting, carrying, dragging, and maneuvering heavy equipment and victims
  • Working in extreme heat, cold, smoke, and hazardous environments
• Work involves exposure to:
  • Loud noise and vibration
  • Extreme weather conditions
  • Moving vehicles, aircraft, and heavy equipment
  • High-stress emergency response environments
• This position requires walking, standing, grasping, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, talking, hearing, seeing, and other repetitive motions when performing tasks and for extended periods of time
• Adequate vision, hearing, range of motion, and speech required
• Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and or noises, which in return could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain
• Ability to operate outdoors in all seasons and occasionally extreme temperatures
• Ability to lift 50 lbs
