Job Title: English Language Development Teacher


Position Summary

The ELD Teacher supports the district’s instructional program by identifying Multilingual Learners, developing tailored instruction aligned with state regulations and district standards, and delivering engaging lessons that promote both academic and social growth. The teacher fosters a learning environment that supports second language acquisition and cultural understanding.


Key Responsibilities

  • Identification & Assessment
    • Identify students with limited English proficiency (LEP) using assessments, observation, registration forms, and staff referrals.
    • Administer and interpret standardized tests and informal diagnostics to evaluate student needs.
  • Instructional Planning & Delivery
    • Develop instructional goals and objectives tailored to individual student needs.
    • Select and use appropriate instructional materials and media.
    • Deliver instruction in alignment with the district curriculum and English language development standards.
    • Adapt lessons for diverse learners across a range of developmental levels.
  • Classroom & Behavior Management
    • Maintain classroom discipline to support active learning.
    • Create a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
    • Display student work and instructional materials to enhance classroom culture.
  • Progress Monitoring & Reporting
    • Monitor academic and social growth; maintain accurate records.
    • Communicate regularly with parents through conferences and written reports.
    • Collaborate with staff to address student challenges related to academics, health, or behavior.

  • Collaboration & Professionalism
    • Participate in school-wide duties, committees, and student activities.
    • Attend professional development opportunities to stay current on ESL best practices.
    • Support staff understanding of EL students’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Student Development
    • Teach basic communication skills and core academic content.
    • Promote self-esteem, cultural pride, and successful integration into general education programs.



Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency with instructional tools and technology (e.g., Smartboard®, classroom software).
  • Strong knowledge of second language acquisition and content-based instruction.
  • Effective classroom management and time management skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Experience working with diverse learners in a collaborative, inclusive environment.
  • Familiarity with Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and student data analysis.
  • Ability to follow and apply educational laws, procedures, and policies.



Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, reach, talk, and hear.
  • Occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 10 pounds; occasionally up to 20 pounds.
  • Requires close and distance vision, color perception, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be capable of performing light physical work and extended periods of instruction or supervision.



Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university.
  • North Carolina licensure in English as a Second Language (00110) or eligible for licensure (required).
