Certified Medical Assistant

Job Summary:

We are seeking a Certified Medical Assistant to join our rheumatology practice. The ideal candidate will be a vital part of our healthcare team, performing a variety of clinical and administrative tasks to ensure the smooth operation of our clinic. This role requires a compassionate individual with strong clinical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a commitment to providing exceptional patient care.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Clinical Support:
    • Patient Intake: Greet and escort patients to exam rooms. Obtain and document patient vitals, including blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and weight.
    • Medical History: Accurately document patient chief complaints, medical history, and medication lists in the electronic health record (EHR).
    • Assisting Providers: Assist the physician or advanced practice provider with patient examinations and procedures.
    • Lab & Imaging: Process and prepare lab specimens for pickup. Provide patients with instructions for labs, imaging, and other diagnostic tests.
    • Medication Management: Prepare the patient and medication for provider injection.
    • Infection Control: Maintain a clean and organized work environment, sterilize instruments, and adhere to strict infection control protocols.
  • Administrative Support:
    • Patient Communication: Answer patient phone calls, respond to messages, relay results and instructions to patients, and address patient questions and concerns in a timely and professional manner.
    • Documentation: Ensure all patient charts and records are complete, accurate, and up-to-date.
    • Prior Authorizations: Process prior authorizations for medications and procedures as needed.

ADA Physical Requirements

  • Mobility & PostureStanding and Walking: Frequently stand and walk for extended periods (e.g., up to 75% of a shift) to move between exam rooms, labs, and office areas.
  • Positioning: Frequently position self to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, squat, twist, and reach to access supplies, equipment, and assist patients.
  • Lifting & StrengthAssisting Patients: Possess the strength and ability to safely support and assist patients with mobility, including helping them transfer on/off exam tables, chairs, and wheelchairs.
  • Lifting: The ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds occasionally (for supplies/equipment) and be prepared to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally for patient positioning.
  • Manual Dexterity Fine Motor Skills: Possess sufficient manual dexterity and fine motor skills to perform precise clinical tasks (e.g., phlebotomy, administering injections, preparing medications) and operate computer keyboards and instruments
  • Sensory AbilitiesVision: Specific visual abilities, including close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus, are required to read instruments, labels, fine print, and assess patient conditions.
  • Hearing: Sufficient auditory ability is needed to hear and interpret patient communication, equipment warning signals, and auscultatory sounds (like taking a blood pressure reading).
  • CommunicationSpeech & Hearing: The ability to effectively and sensitively communicate with patients, families, and colleagues verbally and non-verbally to elicit information and provide instructions
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Medical Assistant certification (CMA) is required.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a Medical Assistant, preferably in a specialty clinic. Experience in rheumatology or immunology is a significant plus.
  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, particularly related to rheumatologic conditions and medications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
