Position Overview

The Director of Medical Affairs drives medical and scientific communications at Pictor Labs for the US and globally.  She/he will lead efforts to promote appropriate use of our regulated products in clinical markets and unregulated products in research settings.  This role requires management of key opinion leader relationships, physician/expert advisory board(s), and scientific communication / publication / conference planning.  This Director will oversee the design, conduct, and publication of health economic analyses to demonstrate successful implementation and adoption of our products.  This externally facing position is also a key contact for peer-to-peer discussions about our products and ensures timely completion of any request for medical information.  This Director will collaborate with other functions of the medical team (Scientific Affairs, Clinical Affairs, Quality/Regulatory Affairs) to achieve company objectives, and, while independent, is expected to support commercial and marketing activities.


An ideal candidate will also bring cross-functional experience in AI-driven tools, software usability in clinical workflows, and evidence-based communication strategies to help drive adoption of disruptive digital pathology technologies.


Key Responsibilities


Medical Science Liaison

  • Provide peer-to-peer consultation related to appropriate use of our regulated products
  • Engage customers in research settings on the scientific basis of our solutions
  • Ensure timely completion of Medical Request Forms for product users
  • Review and comment on any external facing materials for scientific and clinical appropriateness specifically related to any claims 
  • Present clinical or scientific data about Pictor Labs’ products in written, oral, or other media formats to disseminate evidence about virtual staining 
  • Lead development of educational content related to Pictor Labs products
  • Support evidence generation efforts required for regulatory submission and maintenance for US and global agencies
  • Write, collaborate, and approve manuscripts for peer-reviewed journal submissions
  • Support commercial and marketing activities through providing clinical and scientific information with potential customers or for media campaigns
  • Manage team of employees or contractors to ensure completion of all medical affairs activities.
  • Assist Chief Medical Officer and teams across Pictor Labs in accomplishing company objectives especially when benefiting from professional expertise
  • Collaborate with AI/ML and product teams to translate algorithm performance into clinically meaningful outcomes, and contribute to ethically responsible communication of digital diagnostics.
  • Collaborate with marketing team to translate complex scientific data into compelling, brand-consistent messaging that resonates with target audiences while maintaining regulatory compliance
  • Provide medical and scientific review of customer-facing materials to ensure regulatory compliance while preserving marketing impact and brand messaging


Key Opinion Leader Management

  • Develop and maintain strong network of key opinion leaders that are available to assist other areas of company for product feedback, clinical trial participation, ability to speak or engage about virtual staining to colleagues, or other needed functions 
  • Build and support an expert (physician) advisory board that provides guidance on the clinical and scientific direction of company while serving as ambassadors for our products
  • Monitor scientific literature, government regulations, and market environment to advise company leaders on issues impacting our products or business


Scientific Communication Planning 

  • Develop and execute plans for publications, abstracts, and conference presentations that promote our product adoption through collaboration with medical and product teams
  • Coordinate education related to ML/AI and engineering efforts to be understandable by clinical and scientific audiences
  • Support planning and presence at conferences and with select customer meetings to ensure appropriate discussion of the clinical and scientific aspects of our products


Health Economics

  • Lead the design, execution, and dissemination of evidence that supports the operational use of virtual staining including health economic and implementation studies.
  • Conduct analyses on cost savings, time savings, and operational efficiencies through communicating with partners and customers


Required Qualifications

* Masters degree or higher in a relevant field with experience in a clinical area.  For example, this could include MD/DO, MT, PharmD, RN/MSN, PhD, MBA, MHA, etc.  

* Experience working in medical affairs (MSL) or experience in pathology / histopathology / digital pathology is required.  Experience in both will be preferred.

* 5 year work experience minimum in a clinical or regulated medical industry setting.

* Experience with evidence generation and dissemination including scientific writing and speaking.  Publication history in peer-reviewed journals required.  Experience with HEOR studies preferred.

* Experience managing people preferred

* Knowledge of AI/ML applications in digital pathology preferred.

* Strong organizational, leadership, and project management skills.

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

* Familiarity with ethical and regulatory considerations around AI in healthcare is a plus
