Pickering has an immediate career opportunity for an experienced Civil Engineer – Hydrology/Hydraulics in our Flowood office. This position will work with engineers, multidisciplinary project teams, team leaders, and clients on a variety of transportation, drainage, watershed, and water resources projects.
The successful candidate will take an active role in hydrologic and hydraulic analysis and design, project delivery, multidisciplinary coordination, and client interaction. This position offers an opportunity to expand technical and project management responsibilities, provide guidance to junior engineers, and contribute to the continued growth of Pickering’s H&H capabilities.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental/Biological Engineering
- Experience: 5–10 years of relevant engineering experience with an emphasis in hydrology, hydraulics, drainage, and water resources
- Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- Technical Experience: Demonstrated experience performing hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and design, including experience with roadway drainage, bridge and culvert hydraulics, stormwater management, and floodplain analysis
- H&H Modeling: Strong working knowledge of SMS/SRH-2D, HEC-RAS 1D/2D, and experience with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing technical reports and communicating technical information to project teams and clients
- Microsoft Office: Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel for preparation and review of technical reports, engineering calculations, and spreadsheets
- Technical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to independently apply engineering judgment to technical assignments
- Organization: Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and technical deliverables simultaneously
- Teamwork: Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with SMS/SRH-2D, HEC-RAS 1D/2D, HEC-HMS, HY-8, FHWA Hydraulic Toolbox, ArcGIS, and other hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and analysis software
- Experience with MicroStation, Bentley OpenRoads, GEOPAK, Autodesk Civil 3D, StormCAD, or similar engineering design software
- Experience with DOT and municipal transportation and drainage projects
- Experience with NRCS watershed projects, including PL-566 projects
- Experience with FEMA and floodplain studies
- Project and task management experience
- Experience coordinating with clients and regulatory agencies
- Experience providing technical guidance or mentorship to junior engineers
Key Responsibilities
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and design for transportation, drainage, and water resources projects
- Perform bridge hydraulic analyses, scour evaluations, stream stability assessments, and floodplain studies
- Perform roadway drainage design, including storm drainage systems, channels, culverts, and stormwater management facilities
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for NRCS watershed projects, including PL-566 projects
- Develop and review hydrologic and hydraulic models using SMS/SRH-2D, HEC-RAS 1D/2D, HEC-HMS, and other industry-standard modeling software
- Perform watershed plans and evaluations, alternatives analyses, and support development of conceptual designs for water resources projects
- Prepare and review technical reports, engineering calculations, spreadsheets, drainage maps, construction plans, specifications, cost estimates and other project documentation
- Perform field investigations, data collection, and permitting activities
- Coordinate H&H design with roadway, structural, geotechnical, environmental, and other project disciplines
- Coordinate with clients and regulatory agencies and support project permitting
- Manage project tasks, schedules, budgets, and technical deliverables
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers
- Assist with project management and client relationship activities
- Perform and coordinate field investigations and data collection, as needed
