Summary

Under the limited guidance of Engineering Leadership, the Sr. Design Engineer - Mechanical is responsible for developing new products and providing released product support. This position manages all stages of new product development, from concept and prototypes, to design completion, and launch, incorporating customer feedback throughout the process and helping create project schedules and cost estimates.  The Sr. Design Engineer - Mechanical establishes product qualification plans and ensures compliance with regulatory testing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead focused design projects from conception to completion.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to the engineering team.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure design requirements are met.
  • Complete advanced and complicated Engineering Support tasks, through formal support requests and drawing check / approval.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide guidance on technical issues.
  • Evaluate design concepts for feasibility, performance, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Implement Continuous Improvement opportunities within the Engineering Department.
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis and War Room activities.
  • Keep all documentation up to date to ensure ISO/AS compliance.

Qualifications:

Education, Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field, advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering principles, standards, tools (including simulation).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong understanding of product within "home" product line, including application, limitations, qualification, and history.
  • Proficient using 3D CAD tools.
  • Excellent, professional English verbal and written communication. 
  • Ability to interact with stakeholders across departments, including executives and customers as needed.
  • Ability to influence and drive change within the department.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills with a willingness to roll up one’s sleeves to get the job done.
  • Strong decision-making skills. Ability to apply concepts of advanced mathematics during the design and development of newly designed products.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk or hear; and use hands to handle, or touch objects or controls.  The employee is regularly required to stand and walk.  On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders.  The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Equipment Used

This position requires daily use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to, computers, printers, and copiers.  This position requires daily of use small hand-held tools and electronic equipment including, but not limited to multimeters, calipers, soldering iron and stripping machines.

Work is primarily performed in an office and lab environment with limited exposure to recognized health hazards such as dust and noise.

Other Considerations

Location: This position is located at the company headquarters in Waukesha, Wisconsin. 

Travel Required:  Ability to travel 5 to 10% domestically.
