FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Physics with a starting date in August 2025.

The Department of Physics at Brooklyn College has a long history of research and pedagogy. The department hosts three undergraduate programs: a B.S. and a B.A. in physics, and the first two years of a coordinated engineering program. Research interests of the current faculty are predominantly in experimental and theoretical/computational condensed matter physics, including: semiconductor materials and optoelectronic devices; next generation battery technologies; magnetic and non-magnetic phase transition materials; classical and quantum liquids and glasses. Our full-time faculty participate in the Physics doctoral program at the CUNY Graduate Center and hence can involve graduate students in their research. Faculty members of the department have also the opportunity to engage undergraduate students in research activities (e.g., via the college’s Tow Mentoring and Research Program and the NIH-funded U-RISE program).

The department seeks candidates with expertise in theoretical and/or computational physics, broadly defined, or with expertise in an area of experimental condensed matter physics that would benefit from the use of the department’s existing research equipment and the CUNY-wide facilities available through the Advanced Science Research Center. Applicants with research interests that include quantum materials, quantum optics, quantum information sciences, and the development or implementation of techniques of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are particularly encouraged. The department’s research equipment include: a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system, a VersaLab PPMS, a Ti-sapphire ultrafast tunable laser system and a 7.1 tesla NMR system. A faculty recruit engaged in computational physics will be able to make use of New York state’s new Empire AI supercomputing center.

Responsibilities Include

  • Teaching undergraduate, masters, and/or doctoral courses. Developing and maintaining an externally funded research agenda. Advising, mentoring, and training undergraduate and graduate students. Participating in college, department, and/or university committees, and various other service commitments (e.g., curriculum development, student outreach).

Brooklyn College serves students from as many as 150 countries who speak over 100 languages and dialects and thus constitutes a vibrant microcosm of the rich diversity and energy that characterizes the borough of Brooklyn and the greater New York City area itself. Its mission features “a special commitment to educate immigrant and first-generation college students from the diverse communities that make up our city and state.” The college ethos is strongly invested in the educational and career success of a population that encompasses a multiplicity of nationalities, ethnicities, religions, cultures and languages. We are committed to fostering a spirit of camaraderie and shared ideals across the entire spectrum of our varied constituency. By accessing a first-class and affordable college education in an inclusive and nurturing intellectual milieu, our students acquire the skills, confidence, and global mindedness that allow them to thrive in a rapidly changing, unpredictable marketplace of ideas that is increasingly mindless of borders and spans the gamut of cultures and vernaculars.

To this end, the college seeks faculty who are eager to engage with the diversity of our student body and have a demonstrated commitment to inclusion and heterogeneity through teaching, research and/or service. We seek to recruit and retain faculty who reflect the mosaic of our student population. Successful candidates will bring their unique creativity, sensitivity, insights and perspectives to a community that welcomes innovation in scholarship and teaching. Together we will model the finest that a public urban liberal arts, sciences, and professional studies college can be for the present and future.
