Job Title: Seasonal Exhibit Guide

Department: Learning & Engagement

Supervisor: Supervisor of Trail Programs

Supervises: None

FLSA Status: Part Time; Seasonal; Non-Exempt

Pay: $18.50 per hour


General Statement:

Exhibit Guides serve as ambassadors of the Phoenix Zoo, delivering exceptional guest experiences through meaningful

engagement and conservation storytelling. This role combines guest service, public speaking, and animal

interpretation to inspire visitors of all ages.


Essential Duties:

1. Provide quality guest service to both internal and external guests by maintaining a “WILD” working attitude and appearance. (Welcome everyone, I am the zoo, Look for solutions, Deliver excellence)

2. Helping guests enjoy the zoo safely, especially in key areas such as Monkey Village, Stingray Bay, the Engagement stations, the Giraffe Encounter, and the Petting Zoo.

3. Enhance visitors’ experiences throughout the zoo by serving as a guide and using storytelling skills to engage guests with our mission and core conservation messages.

4. Proactively engage guests by initiating conversations, answering questions, and providing outstanding customer service.

5. Help guests enjoy the zoo safely to ensure the well-being of both visitors and animals.

6. Assist with crowd management and control as needed.

7. Interpret the zoo’s signature exhibits using learner-led techniques and best practices for groups of all sizes and ages.

8. Assist guests with navigation and general Zoo information throughout the park.

9. May support special events and evening events when applicable.

10. Maintain cleanliness and safety of exhibits and all assigned work areas and pathways.

11. Attend mandatory training classes and team meetings.

12. Ability to learn and apply new guest engagement skills and conservation messaging in daily interactions.

13. Model professional work behavior to coworkers, volunteers and guests.

Seasonal Guides are required to have the following availability:

  • 3 full daytime shifts. Day time shifts vary with the zoo’s hours of operation.
  • You must have availability for periodic mandatory meetings before work and after work regardless of availability.

Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent required.

2. Minimum 1-year previous customer service experience.

3. Excellent public speaking and presentation skills and the ability to learn, understand and communicate science concepts and messages to the public over a public address system.

4. Existing knowledge about geology, ecology, conservation, and biology is a plus.

5. Personable, responsible, and energetic, with the ability to initiate discussions and effectively communicate with all age levels through good listening skills, friendliness, enthusiasm, positive attitude and humor.

6. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and in a team.

7. Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekdays, weekends, evenings, holidays and special events.

8. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds; regularly bend, crouch, and kneel; stand and walk for extended periods of time; work in both indoor and outdoor environments and in extreme weather conditions.

9. Ability to pass pre-employment background check, drug test and clear annual TB test.
