Forklift Mechanic

Overview

The Forklift Mechanic maintains Phoenix's fleet of approximately 10–15 pieces including propane, electric, and diesel powered vehicles; for forklifts up to 8,000 lb. capacity, bobcat, pallet jacks, man-lifts, scissor lifts and box truck, used in bale handling, flake/pellet movement, finished goods loading, and other field support purposes.

The Forklift Mechanic will also coordinate with warehouse receiver role, to maintain necessary spare parts available, to prevent excess vehicle usage interruption.

The role performs daily inspections, preventive maintenance, corrective repairs, and regulatory compliance checks per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 (powered industrial trucks).

The Forklift Mechanic reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and is a non-exempt position.

Duties

• Perform daily, weekly, and monthly preventive maintenance on all vehicles per manufacturer schedules and OSHA requirements (fluid levels, tire/wheel condition, brakes, hydraulics, forks, mast, overhead guard, operator controls).
• Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and fuel-system issues on propane, electric (48V/80V), and diesel vehicles.
• Maintain battery charging room including battery watering, charger maintenance, hydrogen ventilation checks, and replacement of cells/batteries as needed.
• Replace and service vehicles tires (pneumatic and cushion), forks, hydraulic hoses, brake components, steering linkages, and drive motors/axles.
• Perform propane tank changes, fuel system repairs, and LP regulator maintenance following OSHA and fire code requirements.
• Maintain accurate equipment records including daily pre-use inspection logs (OSHA required), maintenance history, and regulatory compliance documentation.
• Tag out of service any vehicles that fail inspection or is unsafe to operate; communicate status to Maintenance Supervisor and Assistant Plant Manager immediately.
• Coordinate with warehouse receiver and manage spare parts inventory for vehicles including tires, filters, hoses, batteries, forks, and so; coordinate procurement with Supply Chain; assist receiving goods when needed.
• Coordinate with external vendors for major repairs, rebuilds, and annual certified inspections beyond in-house capabilities.
• Support forklift operator training program by providing equipment for OSHA-required practical training and certification skill demonstrations.
• Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required. Technical/vocational training in automotive mechanics, diesel technology, or industrial maintenance strongly preferred.
• Minimum 3 years of forklift/material handling equipment mechanic experience, preferably in an industrial or warehouse environment. Dealer or service-shop experience also acceptable.
• Hands-on skills in hydraulics, internal combustion engines (LPG, diesel), electric drive systems (DC motors, controllers), battery systems, and brake/steering systems.
• Proficient in using Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• OSHA 10-Hour General Industry required. Forklift operator certification required (to test-drive equipment). Manufacturer training certificates (Toyota, Hyster, Crown) preferred.
• PHX provides basic hand tools, specialty tools, lift equipment, and diagnostic scanners.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs., work under forklifts, tolerate shop/plant conditions, and work in outside weather for truck inspections.
• Basic English reading and writing skills for work orders, parts manuals, and safety documentation.
