Position: Violent Crime Prevention and Intervention Advocate
Reports to: Executive Director
Location: In-office at 222 South Royal Ave
Pay: Paid Hourly/ 40-hour work week
Our mission is ensuring freedom from all forms of domestic and sexual violence through education, empowerment, and community.
The Violent Crime Prevention and Intervention Advocate is responsible for community-level response to violence. He or she leads comprehensive violence prevention efforts, including establishing and maintaining collaborations with key community partners (40% of the time). They also provide victim advocacy, hotline coverage, and education/outreach (50% of the time). The remaining time (10%) is spent on grant management and compliance. This position requires a commitment to providing direct service to victims, outstanding communication skills, and ability to network and leverage a range of community stakeholders.
This job’s primary functions include:
(1) Prevention
- Work with community partners to keep youth and adults from entering the cycle of violence; assist individuals at an increased risk of violence
(2) Intervention
- Work with survivors and their families who have been directly impacted by violence to reduce and mitigate their risk level
(3) Grant Management
- Work with Executive Director to write grants to ensure continuity of programs and maintain existing grant compliance
Responsibilities
1) Prevention
a) Utilize evidence-based practices to provide strategic direction to prevention efforts
b) Implement and Lead Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT)
c) Develop and conduct community education on public safety issues as it relates to violence reduction programs including firearm violence
d) Run public awareness campaigns and coordinate associated outreach events
e) Connect those at high risk for violence to education, employment, and housing services
2) Intervention
a) Provide crisis intervention, follow-up, support, advocacy, information and referrals to victims both in-person and over the phone (through the 24-hour crisis hotline)
b) Cover the 24-hour crisis line on a rotating basis and respond on-scene as needed to provide emergency services to victims of crime
c) Conduct check-ins with clients and provide necessary follow-up advocacy
d) Assess victim safety and assist with safety planning including the arrangement of safehouse, hotel/motel accommodations or other housing options as needed
e) Screen in victims based on LAP (high lethality) protocol
f) Oversee LAP Program with local Law Enforcement
Qualifications Required Experience
- At least 3 years of experience in Victim Services or related field
- Strong understanding of issues facing victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other violent crimes
- Commitment to providing client-centered, empowerment-based services to victims of crime
- Ability to oversee and safeguard confidential and sensitive information
- Experience with computers, computer software, and data entry
- Experience with public speaking
Preferred Experience
- Ability to work independently, plan and manage time, and sort multiple priorities while exercising good judgment.
- Ability to foresee and solve problems and meet deadlines in a professional, positive manner.
- Demonstrated spirit of cooperation and ability to build positive working relationships in an interactive, productive, team environment.
- Knowledge of Social Justice issues
- Prior experience in community organizing and/or violence prevention work
- Understanding of non-profit work and grant management
