What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head of Information Technology position at Phoenix Financial?
We are looking for a Head of IT to own technology, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and business applications across the entire organization. This is a senior role with real authority, but it is not a sit-back-and-delegate position. Our IT team is small, which means you will set the strategy and also do the work: you might spend the morning presenting a security roadmap to the CEO and the afternoon configuring a firewall, troubleshooting a Salesforce integration, or scoping a mobile app project with an outside developer. If you like being the person who knows how everything works because you built it or directed it, this is the job.
Because we operate in a heavily regulated industry, you will work closely with our compliance and legal teams to make sure our systems, data, and recordkeeping meet SEC and FINRA requirements.
This position is based in New York, with periodic travel to our Fort Lauderdale headquarters.
What You'll Do
- Own the firm's entire technology environment: networks, cloud infrastructure, endpoints, mobile devices, identity and access management, telephony, and conferencing
- Lead cybersecurity: security architecture, MFA and conditional access, endpoint detection and response, patching, vulnerability management, penetration testing, phishing defense, and employee security training
- Maintain and test incident response, business continuity, and disaster recovery plans, consistent with FINRA and SEC expectations
- Partner with compliance on regulatory technology requirements, including books-and-records retention (SEC Rule 17a-4), electronic communications archiving and surveillance, Regulation S-P safeguards for customer information, and Regulation S-ID
- Support regulatory exams, audits, and due diligence requests with clear documentation of systems, controls, and policies
- Own the firm's business application stack, including Salesforce and related CRM, investor-facing, and mobile applications: administration, security, data integrity, integrations, and roadmap
- Manage outside developers and consultants on application builds, API integrations, and mobile app projects, translating business needs into clear technical requirements and holding vendors accountable for delivery
- Administer Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, document management, e-signature, and other business applications
- Oversee, and step in on, day-to-day support for executives and staff across multiple offices, including onboarding and offboarding, hardware provisioning, and troubleshooting
- Evaluate, select, and manage technology vendors and managed service providers, including vendor security due diligence, contracts, and renewals
- Protect sensitive investor, customer, and firm data through sound access controls, encryption, data loss prevention, and backup practices
- Identify opportunities to automate manual processes and improve how the firm works
- Build and manage the IT budget, asset inventory, and technology roadmap
- Supervise and develop a small IT team and outside contractors
What We're Looking For
- 8 years of progressively responsible IT experience, including at least 3 years leading IT or serving as the senior technologist at a broker-dealer, investment adviser, hedge fund, private equity firm, family office, or similar regulated financial firm
- Genuinely hands-on technical skills across networking, cloud (Azure and/or AWS), Microsoft 365, identity management, endpoint management (Intune, Jamf, or similar), and Windows and Mac environments
- Strong cybersecurity background; experience building a security program at a small or mid-sized firm strongly preferred
- Working knowledge of SEC and FINRA technology and cybersecurity requirements, including recordkeeping, communications archiving (Global Relay, Smarsh, or similar), and Regulation S-P
- Solid working knowledge of Salesforce (administration, security model, and integration architecture) and of how mobile and web applications integrate with back-end systems through APIs; you don't need to be a full-time developer, but you should be able to evaluate designs, troubleshoot integrations, and manage the people who build them
- Required: strong knowledge of and skill with AI tools and technologies, including an understanding of their security, data privacy, and governance implications, and a genuine desire to keep learning as the technology evolves
- Scripting and automation skills (PowerShell, Python, or similar)
- Experience managing vendors, MSPs, outside developers, and budgets
- A service mindset: you are patient with non-technical users, responsive under pressure, and comfortable supporting senior executives
- Absolute discretion with confidential business, investor, and personal information
- Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain technical risks and tradeoffs in plain English
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field preferred; certifications such as CISSP, CISM, Salesforce Administrator, or relevant Microsoft, AWS, or networking credentials are a plus
- Availability to respond to urgent issues outside standard business hours
