Summary
The Safety Manager is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing the company’s safety programs to ensure compliance with corporate, industry, and regulatory standards across heavy civil and power construction projects, including transmission, substation, and line work. This role provides leadership in identifying, controlling, and preventing safety risks while promoting a proactive safety culture throughout all levels of the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead and manage project safety programs across multiple sites, ensuring compliance with OSHA, NESC, NFPA 70E, and company standards.
- Recognize and control hazardous working conditions and unsafe employee or subcontractor activities through proactive safety management and engagement with site supervision.
- Conduct work area surveillance inspections, air sampling tests, property damage assessments, and personal injury investigations.
- Perform detailed incident investigations and root cause analyses, ensuring accurate documentation and follow-up corrective actions.
- Develop and implement safety policies, procedures, and programs to support continuous improvement.
- Review, update, and maintain safety policies in compliance with evolving regulations and company objectives.
- Develop and deliver employee safety training programs, including classroom and field instruction.
- Conduct audits, inspections, and hazard assessments to ensure compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Prepare safety reports and maintain all required documentation in accordance with established procedures.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, management, and field personnel to foster a strong safety culture.
- Participate in safety meetings, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and pre-task planning activities.
- Accompany client, insurance, or regulatory representatives during inspections and audits.
- Support leadership in developing strategies to reduce incidents and enhance safe work performance.
- Travel regularly to project sites to provide hands-on safety support and oversight.
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Expert knowledge of OSHA, NESC, and NFPA 70E standards and their application to construction and power environments.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage safety programs in heavy civil, transmission, and substation construction.
- Skilled in incident investigation, root cause analysis, and report writing.
- Strong ability to develop policies, safety procedures, and training programs.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and various safety management software systems.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional environments.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to influence and coach employees at all organizational levels.
- Ability to travel frequently to multiple project locations.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Environmental Health, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of safety management experience in construction, including transmission lines, substations, and heavy civil environments.
- Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) required; Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
- ASP, GSP, or CHST certifications are advantageous.
- OSHA 500 or equivalent safety instructor credential preferred.
Pre-Employment Requirement
