Innovation Intern

Phillips Exeter Academy
Exeter, NH Intern
POSTED ON 3/13/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/13/2026
This a full-time, exempt, one- or two-year intern position, Academic year (10 months) schedule, including one week prior to the beginning of school.  Salaried position with housing and benefits.  The teaching intern salary for the 2025-2026 Academic year was $40,000, which is subject to review for the coming 2026-2027 Academic Year.

Position Summary

Phillips Exeter Academy seeks two creative, collaborative, and motivated interns adept in applications of technological innovation in education to join the faculty as interns for the 2026-27 school year, with a possible extension for an additional academic year. The Innovation Interns’ primary work will be to support instructors who seek to adapt elements of their courses in light of generative AI and/or design lab opportunities. This work will be across the curriculum, in humanities, STEM, and all classes where instructors and students seek a thought-partner and technical support such as helping teachers create AI-resistant or AI-assisted forms of assessment, build custom GPTs, design complex prompts for lesson planning, etc. The interns will also support student projects, particularly for extracurriculars. They will have opportunities to observe classes and potentially to assist in pertinent courses. A familiarity with the Harkness style of student-centered, discussion-based teaching is useful.

Additional experience in robotics and/or makerspace work is desired. The intern will assist in extracurricular and co-curricular offerings in those areas as relevant. This being the inaugural cycle of Innovation Interns, the ideal candidates will be resourceful and flexible as the faculty’s needs take shape. Successful candidates will have a desire to collaborate with colleagues across the school, and a desire to work with highly motivated high school students in a diverse, mostly residential community.

Applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree, in any field, combined with demonstrated success utilizing innovative techniques for teaching and learning. Proven experience bringing innovation to their own student projects or in supporting students and teachers is desired. Strong genAI literacy and prompt engineering skills required. Multimodal experience (knowledge of image/video generation, audio tools, or basic AI-assisted coding) is a plus as is the ability to translate those skills across disciplines. Strong collaborative skills are required, both for working with teaching faculty and our IT Department and Academic Technology Coordinator. Innovation interns will stay updated on the latest AI releases and report back on which tools are safe and effective for a high school environment (in consultation with our IT department). They will work with our Academic Technology Coordinator on creating supporting documentation and “how-to” tutorials.

Enthusiasm for working with adolescents both inside and outside of the classroom is essential.  Spending time with students giving extra help, advising, working as dormitory faculty, and leading extracurricular activities are integral parts of the job.

Accountabilities

While individual responsibilities will vary from one faculty position to another, the major job duties of all interns include the following:

  • Teaching: Interns engage in one-on-one instruction as they support instructors’ and students’ projects. They may observe and assist in relevant courses. Mentorship is offered in project development and adjusting to Academy life.
  • Cultural Competency:  Interns are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of Academy life.
  • Residential Life:   Interns generally reside in campus housing and play a critical role in cultivating Exeter’s community-centered student dormitory life.  Each faculty member is generally responsible for one weekend and one to four weeknights of dormitory duty per month, depending on the dormitory size.
  • Extracurricular Activities:  Faculty are generally expected to participate in the school’s extracurricular activities (e.g. coaching, advising student clubs, and/or committee work).
  • Willingness to enforce all school policies and rules governing student behavior.

Additional Requirements

  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Clean driving record.
