POSTED ON 9/3/2026

Phillips 66 & YOU - Together we can fuel the future

As an Associate Scientist, Process Integrity in our Energy Research & Innovation organization, you will join a team that provides technical support to the business to keep Phillips 66’s refining, midstream, and renewables assets running reliably. You’ll support forensic analysis, troubleshooting, and reliability work that helps sites diagnose failures, protect equipment, and maintain product quality. Working closely with experienced project leads, you’ll execute well-defined investigations, generate high-quality data, and build the technical foundation to grow into a subject-matter expert over time.

This is an entry-level role designed for someone who is dependable, coachable, safety-focused, and eager to learn. You’ll take ownership of assigned work, communicate clearly, and deliver reliable results that project leads and business stakeholders can act on with confidence.

What You’ll Do

  • Execute assigned tasks, discrete experiments, and well-defined projects across Process Integrity’s technical areas - including foulant and contamination forensics, corrosion support, product and fuels quality, and crude quality - delivering data and observations with guidance from senior team members.
  • Apply standard engineering and scientific methods, analytical techniques, test procedures, and tools consistently and with procedural discipline, safe execution, and strong data quality.
  • Collate and analyze data using established tools, methods, and formats; make accurate calculations and clear observations; and identify anomalies, escalating exceptions when the cause, risk, or business implication is unclear.
  • Contribute to reports and summaries that communicate technical findings. With guidance from senior team members, you will translate results into clear conclusions for internal and site stakeholders.
  • Respond to routine internal and external queries with accurate information on defined processes and procedures, referring interpretive questions to senior peers.
  • Use approved AI and digital tools under guidance for routine tasks, verifying outputs and flagging anomalies.
  • Track your own commitments, follow prescribed project-management practices, and flag schedule or resource issues early so work is delivered within defined time, quality, and method requirements.
  • Build your technical capability through training, feedback, and mentoring from senior team members, while contributing constructively to team safety efforts and workgroup goals.

What You’ll Bring - Required

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related scientific or engineering field
  • 1 or more years of relevant experience (including education) applying standard scientific or engineering methods, laboratory techniques, or data analysis

What Makes You Stand Out - Preferred

  • Ability to execute defined procedures with attention to safety, data quality, and procedural discipline
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with a coachable, accountable, and quality-focused approach
  • Degree emphasis or coursework in analytical chemistry, corrosion and materials, metallurgy, or petroleum/refining processes
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with analytical or test methods (e.g., chromatography, spectroscopy, microscopy, electrochemical testing, or wet-chemical techniques)
  • Familiarity with the refining or renewables value chain, or with crude, fuels, feedstock, and finished-product quality
  • Experience collecting, cleansing, and interpreting data using standard analytical or scientific software and reporting tools
  • Exposure to failure analysis, fouling, corrosion, or contamination troubleshooting in an industrial or research setting
  • Familiarity with ASTM or other standard test methods and quality practices
  • Demonstrated curiosity, strong problem-solving fundamentals, and the ability to work well within a team
