Position Summary:
The Accounting Analyst will work with Chief Financial Officer and Director of Finance regarding reporting, analysis of projects, departmental and enterprise finances. The Accounting Analyst will focus on efficiencies and cost analysis as well as providing accounting support as needed.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Financial Reporting and Analysis
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements, ensuring they align with accounting principles (GAAP or IFRS).
- Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
- Analyze financial data to identify trends, discrepancies, or areas for cost reduction and improvement.
- Perform variance analysis by comparing budgeted vs. actual results and providing explanations for discrepancies.
- Budgeting and Forecasting
- Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and financial forecasts.
- Monitor actual performance against budgets and provide insights into variances.
- Support management with financial projections to guide long-term business planning.
- General Ledger and Journal Entries
- Prepare journal entries and post them to the general ledger.
- Ensure proper coding and reconciliation of accounts, and resolve discrepancies.
- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure proper internal controls are followed.
- Internal Controls and Compliance
- Ensure financial practices are in compliance with regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Assist with internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and analysis.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant financial regulations and standards.
- Data Analysis and Business Insights
- Use financial software and Excel models to analyze data, track KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), and create reports that highlight financial performance.
- Develop models to support financial decisions, including pricing, investments, and cost-saving strategies.
- Identify opportunities for streamlining financial reporting processes and improving efficiency.
- Assist in automating routine accounting tasks or implementing new software tools.
- Recommend improvements to accounting systems and processes.
- Investigate discrepancies and work with relevant teams to resolve issues promptly.
- Monitor and track costs across various departments or projects.
- Assist in evaluating the cost-effectiveness of current business activities and suggest improvements.
- Assist in tax planning and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Keep track of any changes in tax laws and help the organization adapt to these changes.
- Work closely with other departments (e.g., operations, HR) to collect financial data and provide financial insights.
- Support the accounting and finance teams in month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Provide support for special financial analysis, including mergers, acquisitions, and other strategic initiatives.
- Assist with any ad-hoc reports or analyses requested by management.
Educational Achievement:
- High School Diploma or GED a required. Degree in Accounting of Finance, Economics or related field highly preferred.
Work Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with diverse accounting expertise with focus on day to day and overview to include analysis, identification of trends, maintaining data for year-to-year comparisons.
- Exceptional ability to manage data and provide concise reports from accounting systems (CERES) to excel or other format for presentation and reporting.
- Experience with Payroll Management systems a plus.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Strong experience with budgeting, cost analysis, reporting and year-to-year comparisons.
- Knowledge of grants management, including effort reporting, financial reporting, indirect costs, and budgeting.
- Familiarity with ERP software required; CERES knowledge or prior Food Banking experience a plus but not required.
- Strong analytical skills; reporting, month to month, year to year and ad hoc reports.
- High proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
