General Summary
- The Director of Surgical Services coordinates and supervises operational, clinical, and financial aspects of the Surgical Services program, as guided by overall hospital philosophy, goals and objectives as well as administrative and medical policies and procedures. Specific focus is on the areas of operating room, sterile processing, and materials management.
- Works in conjunction with the AVP of Procedural Care and Anesthesia to identify organizational and departmental needs and staffing concerns, as well as areas for growth and improvement throughout Surgical Services and Phelps Health. Creates and implements plans to address these items
- Implements strategies necessary to achieve department goals and observe outcomes.
- Supervises OR manager, Sterile Processing Manager, and Materials coordinators. Coordinates monthly meetings between Surgical Services Leadership to ensure good communication and monitor growth and need for change.
- Continually assesses and improves departments’ performance and maintains appropriate quality control programs.
- Coaches staff to improve professional and clinical development.
- Counsels staff as appropriate in a timely manner and submits proper documentation.
- Assures that performance appraisals are completed within designated time frames.
- Interviews and selects qualified applicants.
- Coordinates with Surgical Services Educator new employee orientation and ensures competency through skill validation.
- Ensures that areas of supervision maintain a clean, safe environment.
- Ensures the department meets or exceeds all state, federal, Joint Commission, and specialty licensing/accreditation regulations and standards.
- Initiates cost reduction strategies.
- Manages department within budgeted expenses.
- Prepares timely monthly reports and cost variance reports.
- Master’s degree in Nursing or Healthcare related field preferred. Management related Nursing or Healthcare degree preferred.
- > 2 years’ experience in functions of the department (or similar department) with one year management or supervisory experience required.
- Certification in specialty, preferred.
- RN License in Missouri or Compact State required.
- Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
- Frequent exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons at times. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids. Minimal physical discomfort.
