Pharmacists Mutual has an opening for an Underwriting Manager.This role will provide motivational leadership and oversight for underwriters. They will work with underwriters to consult, evaluate and underwrite complex, special and/or unique accounts. The AVP and VP levels of this position are promoted or hired on an approved and as needed basis.
Underwriting Manager
- Makes timely decisions, with guidance and direction from primary stakeholders.
- Engages with senior leadership on strategic matters that affect the team.
- Develops leadership style and motivates team to achieve a common goal by demonstrating the professional behaviors expected.
- Learns to identify strength and growth needs of team members and how to engage in development discussions.
- Manage middle market and small commercial underwriting teams.
Essential Functions
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Actively participates in recruitment, training and development, coaching and counseling of underwriting staff.
- May underwrite complex commercial business.
- Manages department workflow and monitors daily productivity to ensure proper controls and procedures are documented, maintained and followed.
- Manages staff which includes setting goals and preparing and administering formal performance reviews in accordance with Company policies and procedures.
- Coordinates regular and systematic quality control audits for each assigned staff member.
- Establishes workload and monitors underwriters’ production.
- Supports senior leadership with the oversight and development of short and long-term Underwriting projects and strategic goals and objectives.
- Develops recommendations for new or improved operating procedures and practices supporting or impacting upon the activities of assigned personnel. Serves as department liaison on cross-functional business teams.
- Oversees development of underwriting guidelines, standards, and workflows. Resolves escalated issues. Ensures compliance to state laws and company requirements.
- Collaborates with other Team Managers in directing team activities and communications.
- Assists in the development, and management of the Team budget; evaluates operating costs and develops initiatives for improving efficiency.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of P&C insurance underwriting.
- Knowledge of insurance policy language.
- Knowledge of employee management principles including hiring, supervision, training, retention, and performance evaluation.
- Managing and improving processes.
- Analyzing information, planning and tracking of budgets.
- Ability to use initiative and apply innovative thinking while effectively managing the team, including setting priorities, objectives and goals.

Experience and Education Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent and 15 year of related experience; or
- Associate’s Degree or equivalent and 12 years of related experience; and
- One of the following industry related certifications: Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), or Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC)
OR
- Bachelor’s Degree and 8 years of related experience; or
- Master’s Degree and 5 years of related experience
Special Requirements, Licenses and Certificates
- AU, API, CIC, or CPCU designation OR obtain within 4 years of hire date
Prerrered Qualifications
- Middle market underwriting experience.
- Middle market underwriting leadership experience.
Work Environment
- Primary work environment is in a climate-controlled office setting
- Work may involve travel to attend meetings at other locations
