Peyton Elementary School Health Assistant: Part-time position: 2 days/week
Position Summary: The School Health Assistant provides essential support to the school nurse by assisting with the daily health needs of students and staff, including administering basic first aid, managing student health records, administering medication, performing specialized medical procedures and assisting with health screenings. They work under the direction of the Peyton school nurse, following established protocols and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
First Aid: Administering first aid to students and staff for minor injuries and illnesses, as directed by the school nurse.
Health Screenings: Assisting with routine health screenings, such as vision and hearing tests, under the supervision of the school nurse.
Record Keeping: Managing and maintaining student health records, including documenting health room visits and vital signs.
Medication Administration: May assist with the administration of medications, following strict guidelines and under the supervision of the school nurse.
Procedures: Performs specialized procedures as trained and delegated by the School Nurse, including diabetic glucose monitoring, carbohydrate counting, insulin dosage calculation, small-volume nebulizer treatment, urinary catheterization, g-tube feedings etc.
Health Room Management: Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe health room environment.
Communication: Communicating with parents, staff, and the school nurse about student health concerns and needs.
Observation and Monitoring: Monitoring students for signs of illness or injury and reporting concerns to the school nurse.
Clerical Duties: Assisting with general clerical tasks, such as filing, sorting records, and answering phones.
Safety and Hygiene: Ensuring a safe and hygienic environment within the health room, including proper cleaning and disinfection.
Qualifications:
- Basic First Aid and CPR Certification: May be acquired after hire from the school.
- Knowledge of Common Student Health Issues: Understanding of common student illnesses and injuries, as well as basic health concepts.
- Good Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and the school nurse.
- Ability to Work Independently and Follow Instructions: Ability to work independently while adhering to established protocols and procedures.
- Confidence to Handle Medical Emergencies: Ability to remain calm while responding to medical emergencies and high stress situations.
- Demonstrate Competency and Proficiency: Acquired and/or maintained knowledge, skills, and ability to assist students with special healthcare needs or perform specific health-related procedures in a safe and effective manner.
Description & Details
We are a small rural school located 20 minutes east of Colorado Springs and 10 minutes east of Falcon, Colorado. We have over 600 students in grades Pre-K through 12. The district has three main school buildings: the Elementary School, which hosts students in Pre-K through 6th grade; the Junior-Senior High School, with students in grades 7-12; and the Career Technical Education Facility.
