This position is responsible for monitoring, controlling and conducting activities that pertain to the safe operation of the refinery, taking corrective action when necessary to ensure that all conditions and operations are in compliance with safety, environmental and operating policies and procedures.

Refinery- Experienced Operator is an hourly position, 14 - 12-hour shifts on and 14 days off working a rotating work schedule. Operators report directly to the on-shift Lead Operator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

  • Operate and monitor two or more of the process units utilizing a Distributed Control System (DCS); including the Crude Unit, Diesel Hydrotreater, Hydrogen Plant and Sulfur Recovery Plant according to Process Safety Management (PSM) guidelines and strict compliance to company safety policies and procedures.
  • Read and analyze specifications, schedules, logs, and test results to determine changes to equipment controls required to produce specified product.
  • Operate control panel to coordinate and regulate process variables and to direct product flow rate, according to prescribed schedules.
  • Monitor and adjust unit controls to ensure safe and efficient operating conditions.
  • Observe instruments, gauges and meters to verify conformance to specified quality and quantity of product.
  • Work closely with Lead Operator and Shift Superintendent.
  • Consistently demonstrates a high degree of knowledge in the details of the process units.
  • Monitor TAPS activity and be ready to respond to any operational changes.
  • Operate heaters, pumps, compressors and other mechanical equipment that process raw materials, feedstock and product transfers.
  • Perform other assigned duties such as maintenance, repairs, housekeeping and emergency response requirements
  • Implementing daily and long term Operation’s Department goals and objectives.
  • Adhere to established operating/maintenance procedures
  • Provide guidance on operational tasks and ensures maintenance work and other tasks are conducted within established plant safe operating practices.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and working telephone.
  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years of work experience either as a Process Operator in an oil refinery/petrochemical plant.
  • Must be able to work a rotating 12-hour shift, overtime as required and on-call.
  • Ability to effectively utilize computer tools.
  • This is a Safety Sensitive Position. Candidates must demonstrate personal commitment to Incident and Injury Free Operations with a proven track record in Safety and Reliability.

Preferred

  • Associates /Technical Degree from a Process Technology Program.
  • Demonstrate ability to be a problem solver. Able to grasp complex issues and apply good problem solving skills to develop recommendations / solutions.
  • Looks for opportunities to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Ability to work closely within a group and with other departments to set priorities, coordinate and follow up on operational objectives.
  • Ability to multi-task with changing priorities and assignments.
  • Ability to work with fellow employees and customers with different personalities and traits, demonstrating good judgment and communication.
  • Instrumentation - Preventive maintenance / Trouble shooting experience.
  • Experience with all process instrumentation, including DCS and emergency systems (HIPPS and ESD devices).
  • Experience with Heaters and other fired equipment. (Crude / Asphalt / Hot Oil) - Compliance equipment.
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. The employee must have the ability to climb towers up to 105 foot utilizing ladders and platforms and perform their job at those heights. The employee must be able to perform job duties while wearing either half or full-face respirators. Employee must be able to hear process and system alarms. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes the ability to adjust focus.
