Job Summary
The Dietitian provides medical nutrition therapy services to inpatients, outpatients and long term care residents in a timely fashion. The Dietitian works to support a high standard of food service delivery and is a nutrition resource to other PMC staff members. The position provides leadership for wellness programs as it relates to nutrition and collaborates with communities to develop health prevention programs using a patient centered approach to healthcare.

Responsibilities

  • The Dietitian is responsible for maintaining a high standard of hospital food service and an effective medical nutrition therapy program. This includes but is not limited to outpatient, acute care, post-acute care, long term care and primary care.
  • Provides individual and group education for diabetes / pre-diabetes, nutrition through the lifecycle, wellness, pre-natal, tobacco cessation and other at-risk patients as needed and train other personnel to provide the same training.
  • Working with communities and staff, develop practice guidelines / standards of care, curriculum, and educational materials for provision of diabetes treatment and prevention for individuals and groups. Provide leadership and technical assistance for diabetes care and prevention-based aspects of grants.
  • Wellness programs with primary care that focus on nutrition and patient centered outcomes for health. This includes evaluating data and collaborating with PMC teams for prevention activities (i.e., primary care team, education and outreach).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Activities Unique to the Dietitian Position.
  • Develops and provides dietary in-service at least once a quarter.
  • Develops with the Food Service & Nutrition Director a series of regular cycle menu plans.
  • Reviews physician ordered diet prescriptions and recommends changes, as appropriate, in a professional manner.
  • Standardizes recipes.
  • Conducts patient visitation for screening nutrition concerns.
  • Assists in maintaining sanitation standards.
  • Analyzes workflow in the Food Service Department and makes feasible improvements.
  • Promotes safety practices and accident prevention.
  • Provides nutritional care through completing nutritional assessments, MDS', and RAPS' where appropriate and provides patient education as needed.
Physical Demands
  • Stands, walks and does physical work for most of the dietary shift.
  • Handles and manipulates equipment, assists in the preparation of food.
  • Requires pushing, reaching, squatting, bending, twisting. Lift up to 40 pounds. Carry kitchen supplies.
Qualifications
Education. The Dietitian must be licensed with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, having completed a master's degree unless otherwise grandfathered under a bachelor's degree.
Experience. Two (2) to four (4) years of experience preferred, working with chronic disease patients, diabetes, nutrition and prevention.
Licensure. State of Alaska licensed Dietitian. Further board certification such as Certified Diabetes Educator or Certified in Gerontological Nutrition Services preferred.

Requirements for Employment Include -
  • Background Check. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background investigation conducted through the State of Alaska in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Drug Screening. All employees must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening, which includes testing for marijuana.
  • Immunization Compliance. Employees are required to meet all immunization requirements as mandated by the State of Alaska and Federal regulations governing healthcare facilities.
