    Job Summary
    To assist the Nursing faculty with instructional and clinical related duties, in support of students with Petersburg High School's Nursing Program.

    Essential Job Functions
    Maintain professional education/development requirements as indicated by the Virginia Board of Nursing including any further requirements for the PCPS/PHS Practical Nursing and Nurse Aide Programs.
    Be familiar with the PHS/PCPS Nurse Aide and Practical Nursing Program Faculty and Student Handbooks; PCPS/PHS Policies for employees/ student code of conduct.
    Be familiar with the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Nursing Regulations for Nursing Education Programs.
    Properly and effectively plan and prepare adequately for your teaching day.
    Engage with students. Clearly communicate with students proper expectations.
    Instruction and evaluation of students.
    Supervising students in the skills lab and clinical.
    Complete all skills checklists, clinical evaluations & clinical assignments as applicable.
    Assist in making sure that course objectives are met.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education: Associates degree in Nursing or closely related field required. Bachelor's Degree preferred with a major in nursing
    Experience: A minimum of one year clinical experience
    Certification and License: Board of Nursing
    1. Other instructional personnel from the health professions with at least one year of experience in their field may supplement the primary instructor in the classroom setting.
    2. Other instructional personnel who assist the primary instructor in clinical instruction shall be registered nurses or licensed practical nurses.
    a. A registered nurse shall:
    (1) Hold a current, unrestricted Virginia license or multistate licensure privilege as a registered nurse; and
    (2) Have had at least one year of direct client care experience as a nurse.
    b. A licensed practical nurse shall:
    (1) Hold a current, unrestricted Virginia license or multistate licensure privilege as a practical nurse; and
    (2) Have had at least one year of direct client care experience as a licensed practical nurse.
    3. Other instructional personnel shall provide instruction under the supervision of the primary instructor.
    E. Prior to being assigned to teach in a nurse aide education program, all instructional personnel shall demonstrate competence to teach adults or high school students by one of the following:
    1. Satisfactory completion of at least 12 hours of coursework that includes:
    a. Basic principles of adult learning;
    b. Teaching methods and tools for adult learners;
    c. Evaluation strategies and measurement tools for assessing student learning outcomes;
    d. Review of current regulations for nurse aide education programs;
    e. Review of the board-approved nurse aide curriculum content; and
    f. Review of the skills evaluated on the board-approved nurse aide certification examination
    F. In order to remain qualified to teach the nurse aide curriculum, instructional personnel shall complete a refresher course every three years that includes a review of regulations for nurse aides and nurse aide education programs and the skills evaluated on the board-approved nurse aide certification examination.
    G. When students are giving direct care to clients in clinical areas, instructional personnel must be on site solely to supervise the students. The ratio of students to each instructor shall not exceed 10 students to one instructor in all clinical areas, including the skills laboratory.
    Pre Licensure Nursing Education specifics (Practical Nursing)
    A. Qualifications for all faculty.
    1. Every member of the nursing faculty, including the program director, shall (i) hold a current license or a multistate licensure privilege to practice nursing in Virginia as a registered nurse without any disciplinary action that currently restricts practice and (ii) have had at least two years of direct client care experience as a registered nurse prior to employment by the program. Persons providing instruction in topics other than nursing shall not be required to hold a license as a registered nurse.
    2. Every member of a nursing faculty supervising the clinical practice of students, including simulation in lieu of direct client care, shall meet the licensure requirements of the jurisdiction in which that practice occurs and shall provide evidence of education or experience in the specialty area in which they supervise student clinical experience for quality and safety.
    6. For practical nursing programs:.All nursing faculty shall hold: (1) A baccalaureate degree, preferably with a major in nursing;
    C. Functions. The principal functions of the faculty shall be to:
    1. Develop, implement, and evaluate the philosophy and objectives of the nursing education program;
    2. Design, implement, teach, evaluate, and revise the curriculum. Faculty shall provide evidence of education and experience necessary to indicate that the faculty member is competent to teach a given course;
    3. Develop and evaluate student admission, progression, retention, and graduation policies within the framework of the controlling institution;
    4. Participate in academic advisement and counseling of students in accordance with requirements of the Financial Educational Rights and Privacy Act (20 USC § 1232g);
    5. Provide opportunities for and evidence of student and graduate evaluation of curriculum and teaching and program effectiveness
    6. Document actions taken in faculty and committee meetings using a systematic plan of evaluation for total program review.
    Working Conditions and Physical Demands
    The duties are primarily performed in an office environment, with no unusual physical demands. The physical requirements described are representative of those necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.
