The Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) Math Teacher provides school level leadership in mathematics by working collaboratively with classroom teachers, Math Teachers/Coach, administrators, and central office instructional and support staff to plan and implement quality math instruction. Math Teacher will also work in tiered interventions settings with students in need of differentiated support. The Math Teacher also provides professional development (PD) at the school site, evaluates students and student data to determine math strengths and weaknesses, and assists with planning and implementation of additional support services in math based on the data-driven needs at the school. Complex work related to the content area of math is performed with the goal of enabling all PCPS students to meet grade level expectations for math and to become competent and confident readers in all aspects of their academic experience. The Math Teacher plans his/her own work with a focus on the provision of exemplary math instruction (research-based and fully aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics) to all identified students.
Essential Job Functions
Collaborates with individual teachers or teams of teachers and administrators through co-planning, demonstration teaching, co-teaching and coaching to improve student outcomes in math.
Supports teachers' understanding and delivery of the Virginia Standards of Learning (and Curriculum Framework) in English through collaborative long-range and short-range planning (including unpacking the standards, writing aligned learner objectives, and effectively using district balanced math framework).
Responsible for providing direct support settings to students in tiered intervention settings.
Assists teachers in creating aligned formative assessments; collecting, analyzing and interpreting formative and summative assessment data; and designing or selecting targeted, developmentally appropriate aligned interventions to meet the needs of students in each performance tier.
Facilitates teachers' use of successful, research-based instructional strategies, including differentiated instruction for diverse learners.
Analyzes and uses data to identify professional development needs of individual teachers or groups of teachers in math; plans and delivers (or collaborates on delivery of) staff development activities for teachers that are responsive to the data and supportive of the goals of the PCPS Strategic Plan, the PCPS Corrective Action Plan, and individual school improvement plan.
Assists administration in identifying school strengths and weakness in math and supports responses that maximize student engagement and student achievement outcomes at the school.
Incorporates and models appropriate selection and use of technology to support math instruction.
Provides professional development to teachers in a variety of group formats using collaborative investigations, discussion groups, book/lesson study, modeling or other methods that engage adult learners while demonstrating effective research-based instructional strategies in 6-8 math instruction.
Conducts non-evaluative observations of math teaching and learning in order to provide evidence-based feedback to teachers and improve instruction and maximize the impact on student outcomes.
Meets regularly with Curriculum team and assists, as appropriate, in the development of PCPS curriculum, instruction, and assessment resources; provides training on use of resources, demonstrating how they support horizontal and vertical alignment of the written, taught and tested curricula in math.
Participates in professional development for personal growth and to increase knowledge of trends and best practices in classroom instruction; applies and shares new learning with colleagues as appropriate.
Responsible for building positive working relationships and communicates effectively with all members of the school community to promote student success.
Creates and administers aligned formative assessments to monitor student progress, provide feedback to students and their teachers, and to adjust subsequent supplementary instruction accordingly.
Implements identified math interventions with fidelity, and provide feedback regarding the strengths and shortcomings of specific interventions to the building principal and school leadership team.
Collaborates with appropriate building-level and division staff to meet all requirements of the PCPS Title I grant.
Maintains time and effort logs and documentation required for federal reporting purposes.
Performs other related duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Advanced knowledge of content, concepts, principles and methodologies of math instruction in a public school setting including knowledge of multiple math assessments and assessment-driven instructional strategies.
Knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning (including Curriculum Framework and Standards of Learning assessments), the PCPS Strategic Plan, and the School Improvement Plan.
Knowledge of current curriculum development theory and practice, program implementation in math, learning theory and current trends and research in education.
Proven ability to effectively plan and deliver research-based practices in teaching math; to assess student math through observation and data analysis; to respond to data by selecting appropriate strategies to meet individual and/or group need; and to monitor students over time to ensure maintenance and use of math processes and skills.
Demonstrated ability to access and use a variety of media and technology to support effective math instruction and job performance.
Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, and administrators in a variety of settings requiring organization, collaboration and professional communication in oral, written, and presentation formats.
