Job Summary
Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) is seeking individuals with a deep commitment to helping students recover learning loss by providing remediation and classroom instructional support in reading and math. The ELEMENTARY LEARNING SUPPORT ASSISTANT will use the "push-in" method, in a virtual and face-to-face learning environment, to support students and teachers. The ELEMENTARY LEARNING SUPPORT ASSISTANT will also use Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) data, the mathematics readiness test (VKRP) for kindergarten, and other diagnostic data to provide targeted, and research-based strategies to improve literacy and numeracy skills for identified students. The ELEMENTARY LEARNING SUPPORT ASSISTANT will be responsible for working with the classroom teacher, Title I school based and division level staff to collect and analyze a variety of data sources to determine if intervention strategies are improving academic outcomes for students.
Essential Job Functions
Gathers and organizes instructional materials for students;
Utilizes best practice instructional strategies and research-based intervention materials to meet the learning needs of identified students in a face-to-face and/or virtual learning environment;
Uses technology tools and techniques effectively to provide "push-in" support in a virtual learning environment;
Demonstrates a working knowledge and understanding of Standards of Learning (SOL) for elementary reading, mathematics, and school division curricular requirements;
In collaboration with the classroom teacher, selects appropriate instructional materials to meet student needs;
Works with the classroom teacher to analyze existing student achievement data and administers student assessments and monitoring instruments as needed to aid in progress monitoring of students to prevent further learning loss in reading and math;
Keeps all student information confidential;
Maintains accurate student records and student progress data reports as required by Title I law and division policy;
Attends professional development opportunities;
Works in a collegial and collaborative manner with school personnel;
Promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect and courtesy and models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions with co-workers, customers and clients;
Follows division guidelines and policies;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications (Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required)
Must have some knowledge of the instructional goals and the policies of public schools.
Considerable patience and the ability to work effectively with children and faculty members are essential.
Must be able to follow written and oral instructions and to perform all required tasks.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills And Abilities)
Education: Associate's Degree or completion of 60 hours of college credit from an accredited college or university recognized by the Virginia Department of Education or demonstrated knowledge of and the ability to assist in reading, writing and mathematics instruction by achieving a passing score on the ParaPro Assessment.
Experience: Three to five years of experience working as an instructional assistant preferred.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
The duties are primarily performed in an office environment,however travel to meetings, professional learning sessions, etc. will be required. There will be no unusual physical demands. The physical requirements described are representative of those necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.
