Job Summary

The CTE-Business Education Teacher is responsible for developing in each student an understanding of our American Business system and its place in the nation's economy; providing knowledge needed for intelligent consumption of business services; developing practical business skills for personal use or for use in business occupations; and encouraging students to develop work and personal habits essential for success in business.

Essential Job Functions

Teaches knowledge and skills in one or more of the following subjects to secondary students; bookkeeping, record keeping, office procedures, merchandising, business communications, data processing, or basic business. Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.

Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.

Organized class activities so that preparation, instruction or laboratory work, and clean-up activities can be accomplished within allotted class time.

Demonstrates skill techniques in home economics and prepares appropriate instructional aids and display materials to enhance learning.

Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.

Instructs students in use, care, and safe operation of household equipment and appliances. Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to equipment as required.

Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an order, productive environment in the laboratory-type classroom.

Evaluates each student's progress in concepts and skills of subject taught and a contribution to a group project or goal.

Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids and equipment, maintains required inventory records, purchases groceries and other supplies as authorized.

Encourages students to demonstrate learned techniques at home with their families.

Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.

Identifies student needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students to solve health, attitude and learning problems.

Supervises students in out-of-classroom and other development programs.

Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.

Maintains current vocational information for students interested in professional careers and resource materials for those who plan to be homemakers.

Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities.

Attends staff meetings, PTA meetings, and serves on staff committees as required.

Performs other related duties as requested.

Job Specifications (Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required)

Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in the appropriate subject area.

Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.

Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, and planning.

Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.

Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.

Ability to organize and coordinate work.

Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.

Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Minimal Qualifications

Education: Bachelors degree

Certification and Licensure: Virginia Collegiate Professional or Post-Graduate Professional license with the appropriate endorsement in Family and Consumer Science or ability to obtain licensure.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead. Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
