The Petersburg Area Art League (PAAL) is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to enriching the community through visual arts, exhibitions, educational programming, and cultural events. Located in the heart of historic Petersburg, Virginia, PAAL supports artists of all backgrounds while providing accessible arts experiences that inspire creativity and community engagement.
We're seeking a passionate, organized professional to join our small, mission-driven team as our Gallery and Development Manager.
The Gallery and Development Manager is responsible for supporting PAAL's mission and strategic goals through gallery operations, communications, marketing, fundraising, and community engagement. This contracted position oversees the day-to-day management of the gallery while helping expand the League's visibility, membership, and revenue opportunities.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinate gallery operations and maintain a welcoming experience for visitors, artists, and volunteers.
- Plan, install, and manage exhibitions, including artist communications and exhibition logistics.
- Develop and execute marketing campaigns across social media, email marketing, the website, and print materials.
- Promote exhibitions, classes, workshops, concerts, and community events.
- Assist with fundraising initiatives, sponsorship development, membership recruitment, and donor stewardship.
- Support special events through planning, logistics, volunteer coordination, and community outreach.
- Maintain organizational records, calendars, and performance metrics.
- Collaborate with the Executive Board, volunteers, artists, and community partners.
- Represent PAAL at exhibitions, community events, and networking opportunities.
- Support facility stewardship and other organizational initiatives as assigned.
We're looking for someone who is passionate about the arts and thrives in a collaborative nonprofit environment.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Associate's degree or higher in Marketing, Communications, Arts Administration, Fine Arts, Nonprofit Management, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
- Experience in gallery management, arts administration, nonprofit organizations, or museum operations.
- Strong marketing and communications skills, including social media management and content creation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Outstanding organizational, project management, and time management abilities.
- Experience coordinating events, exhibitions, or community programs is preferred.
- Ability to build relationships with artists, donors, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners.
- Comfortable working independently while collaborating with a small team.
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends for exhibitions and special events.
- Passion for supporting the arts and creating an inclusive, welcoming environment.
- Contract Position (Annual)

- Hourly rate commensurate with experience
- Reports directly to the Executive Board of the Petersburg Area Art League
