Museum Background

The Petaluma Wildlife and Natural Science Museum (PWM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located on the campus of Petaluma High School. PWM is student-run, meaning that much of the museum’s maintenance, docent work, and outreach is organized and performed by students. The Museum houses over 40 species of reptiles, amphibians, arthropods, and mammals. Thousands of people visit the museum every year, where dozens of high school students docents guide tours and provide our community with hands-on experiences and conservation education.

The animal care tech is responsible for performing animal care whenever students are not present and supervising animal care when students are present. Our animal care techs make sure that all of our animals are well cared for per PWM guidelines, processes, and instructions.

Animal Care Tech - Job description

Title: Animal Care Tech I
Position: Part Time
Reports to: PWM Board President

Primary Responsibilities:

-Responsible for monitoring the health and well-being of all live animals and their enclosures at the PWM in a manner consistent with the goals, mission, and animal care protocol set forth by the PWM.

-Must be comfortable with handling/caring for a variety of animals including snakes, lizards, turtles/tortoises, fish, small mammals, arthropods, and birds.

-Completes daily husbandry tasks, including feeding and cleaning.

-Reports all animal behavioral changes, eating habits, and medical concerns to the Lead Animal Care Technician.

-Maintain cleanliness in animal care prep areas and ensure all of its components are in clean and safe working order.

-Works with PWM Instructors to assure students understand how to care for PWM animals and advise instructors of any student issues.

-Attends Animal Care Technician meetings.

-Advises Lead Care Technician of work availability and notifies Lead Care Technician of scheduling changes two weeks in advance.

-Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

-Experience with animal husbandry, especially reptiles.

-Ability to lift 50 lbs.

-Flexibility to provide coverage on weekends and some weekdays as well as school holidays/vacations.

-Clean background and fingerprint screening through the DOJ.

-Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license

Compensation:
This is a part time, non-exempt hourly position.
