Position Objective:
To support the Corporate Legal Affairs division of the Legal Department by assisting the General Counsel and providing legal advice on a wide range of corporate matters that arise during the conduct of the charitable programs of the organization and its supported organizations, including in the fields of contracts, lobbying and other regulatory compliance, publications and intellectual property, corporate governance and policy, data privacy, planned giving, insurance, and animal protection issues.
Primary Responsibilities And Duties
- Assist and support the General Counsel with their management of the operations and affairs of the Corporate Legal Affairs division under their supervision by:
- Conducting legal research and analysis and providing legal advice and representation on various issues and affairs pertaining to the day-to-day operation of corporations and other legal entities
- Reviewing, revising, and drafting contracts
- Drafting demands and resolving complaints related to transactional, third-party policy, and other disputes
- Advising supported organizations on and assisting them with IRS, federal, state, and local lobbying registration and reporting requirements
- Reviewing and advising the organization and supported organizations about potential issues arising from their publications including internet features, news releases, and audio-visual content
- Reviewing Submission of Audio/Visual Elements forms and advising the organization and supported organizations’ on compliance with policy governing the same
- Providing legal advice on domestic and international data privacy and protection law requirements and assisting with the development and maintenance of compliance programs
- Responding to employment-law-related claims
- Maintaining and expanding the organization’s trademark portfolio and licenses
- Advising supported organizations on and assisting them with their preparation, filing, and defending of shareholder proposals
- Maintaining the organization’s service contracts with supported organizations
- Advising staff of the division on and assisting them with their work on contracts, demands and disputes, lobbying registration and reporting, publications and SAVE form review, data privacy and protection compliance, and trademark inquiries
- Conduct legal research and provide advice on a variety of charity, animal protection, and animal rights issues, statutes, and regulations
- Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
- J.D. and a minimum of four years of general legal experience, or two years of legal experience in the areas identified under Primary Responsibilities and Duties
- Member in good standing of the D.C. bar or a state bar association
- Ability to work in the organization’s Washington, D.C. office at least twice per week
- D.C. Notary Public appointment preferred
- Proven excellent legal research, writing, and verbal advocacy skills
- Proven ability to handle multiple tasks within strict time constraints
- Support for PETA's philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA's positions on issues
- Commitment to the objectives of the organization
